Goresbrook clinched the Essex Sunday League Championship with a hard earned six wicket victory over local rivals Upminster at May & Bakers.
After winning the toss and with one eye on securing the six points required to secure the title, skipper Shane Barwick invited the visitors to bat on a good track. Ted Ivory gave the hosts an immediate fillip when bagging the important wicket of Kiran Kullar for a duck. ‘Brook’s attack was then forced to toil in the heat as Muhammad Ahmed (125 not) and Zoran Suneel (96) put on 184 for the second wicket. Ahmed’s excellent unbeaten century included 10 fours and 3 maximums whilst Suneel found the rope on 15 occasions before being undone by Barwick when four short of a ton. Kaushik Yeluri and Kane Messenger also claimed wickets as Upminster closed on a daunting 248 for 4 from their allotted 40 overs.
After tea, Goresbrook showed why they have only been beaten once during their Sunday campaign, digging deep to produce a resolute batting display.
Lee Jones marked his return to form with another impressive knock – his second half century of the weekend forming the mainstay of ‘Brook’s reply. Jones fashioned 11 boundaries in a superb unbeaten 87 from 82 balls. Jordan Calverley, called up to the side following the injury on Saturday to Vice Captain Pawanpreet Singh, contributed a sparkling 76, finding the rope seven times when supporting Jones in a second wicket stand worth 140. Ajmani’s two wicket burst merely delayed the crowning of the new Champions as 20 year old Ted Ivory thrashed 4 fours and 2 maximums in an eye catching unbeaten 47 to kick start the celebrations.
Goresbrook 251 for 4 from 36.4 Overs (18 points) beat Upminster 248 for 4 from 40 Overs (6 points) by 6 wickets
