Goresbrook opened their account in the Essex Sunday league with a fine victory at Benfleet, the youthful Goresbrook side showing plenty of enthusiasm in the field, chasing lost causes all afternoon to keep Benfleet to a manageable 203-6 from their 40 overs.
Gareth Steed with 97 was the pick of the home batsman and he looked well set for a century before being run out by Jordan Calverley. For Goresbrook Shaun Ross took 3-20 and the support bowling was as tidy as ever.
In reply, 14 year old Adi Kumar and 16 year old Charlie Thompson saw off the new ball before Kumar went for 7, but Thompson and Toby Maund then kicked on, adding 62 before Thompson went for 36. That brought Jordan Calverley to the crease and he and Maund started to open up, taking the score on to 158-2 before a couple of quick wickets could have provoked some jitters. Fortunately for Brook skipper Jordan Harris was more than up to the task as he took his side home with an unbeaten 29 in tandem with another promising 15 year old Lee Jones, Goresbrook picking up maximum points and a 6 wicket victory in the penultimate over.
