Goresbrook battled past neighbours Rainham at M&B in the Essex Sunday League T20 competition to set-up a quarter-final clash with Harold Wood, all-rounders Shane Barwick and Toby Maund catching the eye in a workmanlike batting performance on a day when regular showers made conditions tricky after the first powerplay.
On a good early season deck Maund ensured that Brook got off to a flyer with a stylish 36 before he holed out at deep midwicket and Barwick seemed set to take the hosts to a total around 170, as he smashed 3 sixes and 4 fours in a fine 48 before missing a straight one from Anish Patel. The Brook innings fizzled out somewhat after that, with skipper Jordan Harris keeping the scoreboard ticking over to set Rainham 150 to win, Patel with 3 for 17 being the pick of the bowling.
The Rainham response was behind the rate from the outset, as Kane Messenger bowled Sid Patel in the first over and then tight spells from spinners Billy Smith and Lee Ramduth saw the visitors 50-2 at the halfway stage. The Goresbrook bowlers kept on top of the game in the second half, taking regular wickets as Rainham looked to accelerate, Craig Ivey with 4 for 19 being the main wicket taker as Rainham were dismissed for 118 in 19 overs, Ronnie Jackson with 23 top scoring for the Spring Farm Park men.
