Goresbrook and Hornchurch Athletic U11's slugged it out in this pulsating friendly held at May & Bakers on Wednesday evening. The glut of wickets that fell was due in some not inconsiderable part to the fact that just a few hours previously the pitch had been submerged under an inch of water but quite as much to some excellent bowling.
Athletic batted first and their first pair batted solidly against Brook's opening pair of Krishan Kumar and Andre Thoufick until the fourth over when two wickets fell in two balls as Frankie Boland threw down the stumps and U11 debutant Albie Smith took a catch at midwicket off Thoufick. Matthew Elsom and Tommy Smith both then kept things tight bowling maidens with Smith nabbing two wickets to leave Athletic at 214/4 after 8 overs. Andre Thoufick and Frankie Boland then combined to grab a run out as the visitors began to increase their scoring rate. Alfie Atkins and Albie Smith struggled to slow down the scoring although Smith did take a debut wicket but an impressive burst from Frankie Boland of 3-9 and a further wicket for Tommy Smith brought the innings to a close on a Terriers adjusted total of 221-11.

Brook's reply set off apace as Krishan Kumar bludgeoned 22* with a huge six over square leg, a 5 and a brace of 4's for the loss of a single Tommy Smith wicket. However the game was turned on its head in the next pairing as seven wickets were lost for the addition of just 8 runs. A further 3 wickets were lost by the next pair although 8 year old Philippe Thoufick maturely caressed 3 boundaries through square leg in his knock of 13. This momentum was continued by Alfie Atkins who stroked 14 from the first over and credit must go to Kieran Pacey who defended ably, safely batting out a a maiden against Athletics impressive left armer Nathan who later on bowled Atkins somewhat fortuitously with a ball that rolled along the ground. Nevertheless Atkins finished on 21 in a partnership of 29/1 and Frankie Boland hit a six and two fours in his undefeated knock of 21 to leave Brook winners by 30 runs.
