New record 9th wicket partnership takes Brook to unlikely win.

Goresbrook 4s travelled to the immaculate WACA ground on Saturday for their division 11 T Rippon fixture with Great Baddow IV.
Despite the home team including a few 2nd team players whose game against Purleigh had been cancelled due to the death of Purleigh's Mick Elliot, Brook got off to the best possible start when Ricci Parnell struck in the first over. Owen Elsom bowled into the wind at the other end and was unlucky to see 3 good chances put down. Tommy Puncher came into the attack and bowled two perfect yorkers.......to himself ..... Both got wickets; the first safely snaffled by Martin Rooke at mid off and the second a plumb LBW that quite flummoxed the batsman. Further wickets for Adi Kumar, courtesy of a Keith Maund catch, and Martin Rooke, from a sharp stumping by the tidy Dominic Gurden, had the home team in trouble at 55-5 but a sensible rebuilding by Jon Pyle and Rowan Clark saw the momentum shift towards the home team as both Batsmen scored fifties until Clark was run out by a direct hit by Adi Kumar in the final over to give Great Baddow a total of 185-6 from their 40 overs.
Brooks reply was soon up against it as Alfred, Wilkinson, Kumar (16) and Martin Rooke to a first baller that was without doubt the ball of the day, all fell to George Simmons and a brace for Colin Panell, accounting for Puncher (10) and Gurden, had the visitors in deep trouble. Keith Maund (12) began the fight back and Billy Parnell (18) attacked impressively but when Owen Elsom joined Ricci Parnell in the middle at 83-8 the game looked well and truly lost.
However with just under 20 overs to go and batting bonus points to aim for, the nonagenarian pairing soon set to work, playing each ball on its merits, running adeptly between the wickets and punishing the bad ball. Making full use of the short boundary on one side of the ground, the run rate fell from over five to four and then with a flourish of boundaries Parnell brought up his fifty in 48 balls. Sensing that the game was there to be won, Parnell knocked 14 off an over and Elsom nudged and winked and suddenly just seven were required from the final 30 balls. However only 9 were required as Parnell chipped to long on to secure a two wicket win . Parnell finished on 75* with ten fours and two maximums and Elsom a club best 27* including four fours. The partnership of 105* surpassed the 78* of Dave Whisker and Lee Wilkinson against Noak Hill Taverners in 2003.
Great Baddow were magnanimous in defeat but credit must also go to the ground staff at the Writtle Agricultural College ground who produced a true wicket that made the game the even contest that it was.
This victory puts Brook up to second in the table 8 points behind Rainham with Wickham 2nds at home to come next weekend.
