Goresbrook’s first eleven entertained Woodford Wells at May & Bakers Sports Ground on Saturday.
Newly-wed home captain Jordan Calverley won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first and the visitors opening pair posted 41 for the first wicket. The introduction of Kane Messenger reaped immediate dividends as he removed Jonathan Gaffney for 25 with first delivery. ‘Brook’s paceman then proceeded to run through the top order finishing with 4 for 52. Opener Umar Ayub offered dogged resistance until being run out by home skipper Calverley for 48. Calverley more renowned for his exploits with the willow, produced an excellent spell of 4 for 44 from 14 economical overs as ‘Wells batters were kept in check. Harry Douris and Harry Boparai both contributed 28 to steer the visitors to 190 for 9 from a maximum entitlement of 50 overs.
After tea, ‘Brook suffered an early set back when Toriqal Islam (10) was trapped leg before by Rob McNeill. Fellow opener Imon Ahmed played some flamboyant shots before departing for 29. Devon Solanki’s three wicket salvo knocked the stuffing out of the Dagenham outfit’s top order before Ted Ivory (28) and Kaushik Yelari (22) took on the visiting attack. The final word was left to Gareth James (5 for 35) who cleaned up Maswer Mansoor to complete his nap hand, gaining revenge for Wells who were beaten by Goresbrook on the opening day of the season.
