Goresbrook’s first eleven travelled to Pilgrims Hatch to take on Old Brentwoods on Saturday.
Home captain Babar Choudhary won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first and his decision appeared vindicated when left arm seamer Saeed Rauff, used the new ball with great effect to poach three early wickets. Visiting Captain, Jordan Calverley then displayed a cool head with a patient knock of 71. The 32 year old drew on all his experience fashioning 10 fours and a maximum before holing out to Wasim Khaled. Calverley received excellent support from Kane Messenger who compiled an entertaining 36, the pair giving a masterclass of running between the wickets, in a superb fourth wicket stand of 84. Their departure set up Muhammad Attuallah and Kaushik Yelari for a tremendous finale to the latter part of the visitors’ innings. Attuallah exuded confidence with the willow and his flamboyant display yielded 5 fours and 7 sixes in accumulating a magnificent unbeaten 83 from only 45 deliveries. Yelari played the perfect foil with a compelling 26 as the pair posted 108 for the seventh wicket, lifting Goresbrook to 243 for 7 from a maximum 50 overs.
After tea, Ahmed Zulfaqar anchored the hosts reply - his sensible approach contributed to an impressive 63. The Old Boys top order continued the misery for the visiting attack as Mervyn Westfield (40) and Khaled (31) accelerated the scoring. Shane Barwick and Attuallah bagged a brace of scalps apiece but it was left to captain Choudhury with an undefeated 45 to lead his side home to a 5 wicket success.
