Goresbrook proved too strong for a Westcliff outfit pushing for promotion – denting their challenge, with a handsome 88 run victory at May Bakers Sports Ground on Saturday.
Home Captain, Jordan Calverley won the toss and elected to bat and his decision was duly vindicated. Brook’s skipper led by example producing a magnificent century forming the backbone of his side’s total. The right-handed opener fashioned 13 fours and 2 maximums before being last man out for 115. Along the way he received staunch support with six of top seven batsman making double figures. Kaushik Yeluri marked his promotion to the first eleven, finding the rope on five occasions in an excellent 28 from only 15 balls. ‘Cliff’s overseas player, Hammad Ul Hassan, was the most successful of the visiting attack with 5 for 83 whilst visiting captain Joe Robbins bagged 4 for 51 as ‘Brook closed out on an above par 258.
After tea, Ted Ivory gave the hosts a fillip when sending both openers back to the hutch early in the exchanges. Shane Barwick’s spin complemented Ivory’s seam as the pair made inroads into the Seasiders resistance. Hassan (38) and Robbins (59) combined for a sixth wicket stand of 101 before the returning Barwick and Ivory accounted for each of them respectively. Ivory finished with a personal best haul of 6 for 53 from 16 whilst Barwick’s 14.5 overs yielded 4 for 50 as the pairs impressive display with the ball clinched a deserved 88 run victory and a maximum 25 points.
