Goresbrook’s first eleven enjoyed the better of a draw against Old Southendians & Southchurch in a rain affected game at Garrons Saturday. The Dagenham outfit gave an aggressive display with the bat as openers Lee Jones and Jordan Calverley posted an intermittent partnership of 65 before the former departed on 27. Calverley took up the gauntlet thrashing 7 fours and 2 maximums in a robust, unbeaten 83 receiving excellent support from Shane Barwick who struck 2 sixes in a quickfire 38 not. ‘Brook skipper Kane Messenger then made a competitive declaration giving the Old Boys 30 overs to achieve their target of 167.
After tea, Barwick struck early to remove Hafiz for 2 and a splendid throw from Jones accounted for the departure of Darvill for 12. Saad Bin Yousef bagged a brace of scalps and Messenger also gained a success with the ball as wickets fell at alarming regularity for the hosts. The return of Barwick (3 for 50) heralded two more wickets but the weather was to have the final say as the heavens opened with five balls remaining and the Umpires drew stumps for a final time.
