Defeat by Just Three Runs Despite Ivory Blitz in The East End

Goresbrook’s 1st Eleven’s hopes of clinching the Division 3 title received a jolt at Flanders on Saturday when, following two breaks for rain they were given a revised total of 182 from 30 overs under the Duckworth Lewis Method and agonisingly, fell four runs short of victory.
Visiting Captain Kane Messenger won the toss and invited the hosts to bat on a humid afternoon but was rueing his decision as openers Syed Adnan Ashraf (36) and Aswad Mohammed (26) tore out the blocks clubbing 62 runs for the first wicket. The introduction of left arm spinner, Shane Barwick, yielded immediate dividends as he broke the partnership going on to claim 3 for 36 in an accurate 10 over spell. Muhammad Sheriyar Munawar held Newham’s innings together with a patient 54 watching on as Daryl Forward decimated the middle order with an economical spell of 3 for 22 in his 10 over contribution with the ball. The returning Ted Ivory bagged a brace of scalps and a wicket apiece for Jordan Calverley and Messenger plus a sharp run out from Lee Jones limited the East Londoners to 217 all out form 46.2 overs.
After tea the Dagenham outfit suffered an early setbacks in the face of fiery spells from Khawar Khurshid and Atesaam Syed who each claimed a couple of victims to leave ‘Brook reeling at 33 for 4 when rain interrupted or a second time. After the application of the DL formula, the visitors faced an uphill struggle requiring 182 to win at almost 9 an over for the remaining 14.2 available overs. Jordan Harris’ 35 paved the way for 19 year old Ted Ivory to thrash 46 from only 27 balls before being crucially run out from a direct hit by Ayaz Younus. Forward strode to the crease with only 11 balls remaining and proceeded to strike two fours and two maximums to scatter the fielding side but the visitors fell agonisingly four runs short of an unlikely victory in an entertaining match despite the inclement weather.
Goresbrook go to Stanford-le-Hope in a must win finale to the season next Saturday whilst Newham face Leigh-on-Sea in a winner takes all battle to stay up.

Newham 1st 217 all out in 46.2 overs (20 points) beat Goresbrook 1st 178 for 9 in 30 overs (8 pts) by 3 runs on Duckworth Lewis Method
