Goresbrook’s 1st Eleven climbed to the top of the table with an impressive six wicket victory at May & Baker Sports Ground on Saturday. Visiting Captain Ronnie Yates won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny afternoon but was rueing his decision as the hosts attack took full advantage of the new ball. ‘Brook Skipper Kane Messenger’s fiery opening spell yielded two quick wickets but Daniel Baldwin (48) and Shiraz Ali (22) added 57 for the third wicket to steady the visitors nerves. The introduction of seamer Daryl Forward turned the game in the hosts favour - the 28 year old bagged a nap hand of 5 for 23 to decimate Town’s middle order. Left arm spinner Shane Barwick (2 for 18) turned the screw at the other end before Messenger returned to dismiss Tom Wilcox, posting a return of 3 for 28 as the visitors were whittled out for a paltry 108.
Goresbrook then had to navigate eight overs before tea, suffering an early setback when opener Shaun Ross was dismissed for 3.
After tea the Dagenham outfit quickly set about their target as Juber Rukon found the rope on six occasions top scoring with 37. Lee Jones (15) and Barwick (29) maintained the charge before Danny Gillham struck the winning blow to secure a handsome six wicket victory, boosting Goresbrook’s hopes of promotion.
