Albert tames Athletic.

Goresbrook u9's made the short trip to Hylands Park for their friendly fixture with Hornchurch Athletic on Wednesday evening.
Athletic had for the past 2 seasons been unable to field an u9's side so Brook were facing a young and inexperienced team while fielding themselves a team full of both veterans and rookies.
Skipper Liam Elsom won the toss and chose to bat first on a blustery but dry evening. The pitch itself was soft but quite playable although sections of the outfield were decidedly sodden following Tuesday's downpours. Albert Sleight top scored with 13 and there were also runs for Liam Elsom 9*, Harry Ivory 8, Grace Wood 6,Charlie Trowell 6, Bella Boland 2, Lily Nunes 2 and Maggie Sleight 1* plus a smattering of extras as is the norm at this level that helped Brook total 282 for 3 adjusted down to 267 under Terriers rules.
Athletic found the going tough from the outset as a succession of bowlers asserted themselves.
Liam Elsom took one wicket, as did his St Vincent's school class mate Lily Nunes, whose wicket was her first in just her second game since she arrived at the club in May. Bella Boland grabbed two wickets in a spell that marked the improvement she has made over the past year. Experienced campaigners Harry Ivory and Charlie Trowell each took three wickets and catches were held by Liam Elsom, Grace Wood and Charlie Trowell but the plaudits must go to Albert Sleight who in addition to a catch and an eye catching boundary saving dive in the deep that left him drenched from head to toe, also took 5 wickets in a domineering display.
Athletic struggled to a net score of 132 in reply losing 15 wickets in total.
While several members of the team regularly feature in the u11's and train predominantly with a hard ball, the rest have prospered under the tutelage of Andrew Pauling and Joe Skippy Barwick this summer and credit must be given to the lads for the successes the youngsters have had so far this year. Coaching the club's future is a rewarding experience and everyone has something to contribute.
