Hornchurch beaten by 9 runs

Goresbrook and Hornchurch U9's played out a fantastic game of terriers cricket at the May and Baker ground on Sunday morning.
Skipper Grace Wood chose to bat first and brothers Albert (9) and Stanley Sleight (19*) put on 33 for the loss of a single wicket with Albert hitting the ropes twice and Stanley 4 times including a lofted off drive for 6.
The second pair of Archie Dias and Ben Atkins were both unbeaten as a further 9 runs were added and the third pair of Bella Boland and Ollie Frederick's took the gross score up to 252 with 10 more runs in an unbeaten partnership.
Liam Elsom and Charlie Trowell were the next pair and they took a good look at the bowling with Elsom scoring a single and a four and 5 wides adding ten. Trowell then played out a maiden that belied the fireworks to come as 15 were smashed from the third over and 13 from the fourth as the 8 year olds hit the ropes at will with Elsom hitting 3 and Trowell 4 boundaries including a six over square leg. A partnership of 38 took the gross score up to 290-1.
Grace Wood closed out the innings with Ollie Fredericks and got the score up to 298 but the gloss was somewhat taken off as an unnecessary runout was followed by a fine catch at midwicket that took ten runs off the total. Brook finished on 283-3.
Goresbrook bowled with far greater accuracy than usual but this accuracy enabled more shots to be played and therfore runs to be scored. Albert Sleight nabbed a wicket early on and Archie Dias grabbed another mid innings courtesy of a Charlie Trowell catch at cover but an apparent reluctance to utilise the rudimentary long barrier whilst fielding allowed extra runs to be scored. Indeed the visitors last pair made every effort to score the 42 runs required for victory but in the end came up 9 runs short as Grace Wood took a return catch that effectively ended the game with 2 balls to spare.
Both sides were evenly matched and gave a fine account of themselves in a keenly contested game that went to the wire.
Goresbrook U9's won by 9 runs.
