Goresbrook Under 9s 211 for 4 beat Hornchurch Under 9s 195 for 7 by 16 runs

On Sunday morning, Goresbrook fielded their youngest ever side as the inexperienced Under 9's defied the odds to run out well-deserved winners in their first contest of the season. Fielding two 6-year olds and a 7 year-old, the main focus was to provide this young side with some match experience and enjoyment but what was to follow provided everyone involved with a pleasant surprise.

Hornchuch won the toss and invited George Sleight and his charges to bat first on a pitch affected by the heavy rain on Saturday evening. Runs were difficult to come by as the Goresbrook youngsters took time to adjust to the outdoor conditions and impressive home attack which boasted far more experience, in both game time and age compared to their young visitors. The key for Goresbrook was that they batted with great discipline only losing 4 wickets in their allotted allocation of overs - Nathan Dowridge (2) and Tyler Fredericks (1) stood strong without losing a wicket in their 4 overs as a pair. Sleight brothers Stanley and Henry achieved a similar feat as the final pair, continually repelling the impressive home seam attack. Skipper George Sleight top-scored with 3 runs but his youngest sibling, Albert deserves a special mention after keeping his wicket intact throughout his 4 overs, at the tender age of 6!! The visitors closed their 16-over innings on 211 after the application of the Terriers scoring system.

If the young Goresbrook boys impressed with the bat, they excelled with the ball and in the field taking 7 wickets on their way to a famous win. Ted Ivory led the visitors attack well, taking a superb caught & bowled chance and was ably supported by his new-ball partner Nathan Dowridge who took 1 for 11 from his 3 overs. The stars with the ball were undoubtedly 6-year old pair Archie Dias (1 for 3) and Albert Sleight (1 for 2) who tied up 4 overs superbly in their first ever matches. Stanley and George Sleight chipped in with a wicket apiece as the visitors continued to take wickets at vital times with Tyler Fredericks also completing 2 tidy overs. The ground fielding was also superb as the youngsters added a run-out to their wicket haul to finish up comfortable winners by 16 runs. A great future lies ahead!!
