Belhus 267 for 5 lost to Goresbrook 268 for 7 by 3 wickets (Terriers rules)

Goresbrook Under 11s completed an astonishing comeback to beat Belhus at Belhus Park on Sunday morning.

After losing the toss and being put into the field 'Brook bowled well in windy conditions. George Smith and Tahmid Kondakar opened the bowling and kept the opening partnership under control without really threatening to take a wicket. The next bowling pair of youngsters Ted Ivory and George Sleight however got their reward.

Ivory controlled his bowling superbly and enticed the Belhus batsman down the track to enable Gillham to make a smart stumping before the safe hands of Ben Willis took two fine catches, one off Ivory and one off Sleight. Ivory was superb in his opening spell taking 2 for 2 before finally ending with 2 for 11.

Callum Owen and Sam Wood continued the bowling and although they went for several runs they took a wicket apiece. Wood with a superb delivery that cut in to topple the timbers and Owen taking a fine catch off his own bowling with a well disguised slower delivery.

Billy Parnell and Ben Willis bowled two tight overs each before Stanley Sleight finished off the innings with a mature spell of 0 for 9. Belhus posted 267 for 5 which was set to be a challenging target.

In response, George Smith and new opening partner Owen failed to get Goresbrook off to a good start. Owen was dismissed three times by the Belhus opening pair and Goresbrook were off the pace straight away.

Brothers Sleight were next to the crease and batted well apart from a mis-communicatioin that led to a run out. Young Stanley survived nine balls without loss to settle the innings down.

Third pair Wood and Kondakar were next in the firing line. Wood was superb, hitting a dazzling 15 not out and running superbly. It was what 'Brook needed to get back into the game. Although only scoring 4, Kondakar was an excellent partner for Wood.

Ivory and Willis were next with instructions not to lose a wicket and although they lost one they kept the run chase alive. Following his excellent bowling spell, Ivory was equally as good with the willow. Having learnt from previous failures he kept his wicket, getting behind the ball and defending well, in addition to playing some excellent attacking shots in his 7 not out including a fabulous square cut for 4.

Final pair Parnell and Gillham came in next needing 40 for victory in the final four overs. As expected, these two scampered for every run they could. Parnell was the more aggressive at first hitting two 4's and a three early on, before the pair pushed too hard and lost a wicket to a run out.

Runs flowed and the target reduced and the pair required 7 to win from the last over. Two no-balls and quick running got Goresbrook in front before Parnell edged behind to setup a dramatic ending. Requiring one run from the final ball of the match Parnell found a gap and the pair scampered a final single to clinch victory.

Coach Gillham commented; "A great advert for Under 11's cricket and terriers rules, you're always in the game in this format and all the pairs today batted great". "Wood and Ivory were superb and got us back into the game and with Parnell and Gillham you know you will get runs and they saw us home". "A great all-round team performance, well done boys."
