Goresbrook 4's returned to action on Saturday in this TRippon division 9 clash with high flyers St Johns Billericay.
With a motley crew at his disposal, with 5 decades separating the youngest from the oldest, Andrew Pauling lost the toss and was delighted when the visitors chose to bat on a straw coloured pitch.
St Johns got off to a flyer, as the openers played their shots and raced to 75 off the first ten overs. However Phil Thoufick had other ideas and dismissed Brown for 48 with his orthodox left arm spin. Dan O' Sullivan and Bobby Granger then got among the wickets with three apiece which slowed the run rate down considerably but it could have been more had catches been held. Owen Elsom returned for a second spell and quickly saw off the tail with a brace and a run out.
However the true highlight of the innings was the keeping of Paul Atkins. The Beva took a few overs to get the feel of the ball but gradually made the position his own as he nabbed two smart stumpings and a diving catch to validate his volunteering for the role.
St Johns finished on 201 all out from 36.4 overs
Brook's reply started brightly enough with Leonard Thoufick and Dave Leadbetter both hitting early boundaries but Leadbetter was bowled by a peach and Bev tickled his first ball through to the keeper. Matthew Elsom survived the hat trick ball but fell soon after. Leonard Thoufick and Tommy Smith had what looked like a promising partnership until Smith fell for 12 to the part time spin of the loquacious Brown and skipper Pauling followed 2 balls later. Leonard Thoufick fell for 16 in the next over and Brook found themselves 51-6 at the drinks interval. This soon became 60-8 in the 19th over as Dave Lambert and Phil Thoufick fell in quick succession.
Bobby Granger came to the crease and twice stopped the bowlers in their tracks with his unorthodox stance but then began to hit out, leading quite the charmed life as he lofted 3 boundaries on his way to 19 in a partnership of 48 with the resolute Owen Elsom. However Granger misjudged a single to mid on and was run out by a direct hit.
Elsom had had to deal with a barrage of waist high full tosses and wore as many as he put away but had smacked 9 boundaries, all between long leg and mid-wicket when Dan O' Sullivan, showing he is a much better batsman than he gives himself credit for, gloved a popping delivery to the keeper.
Elsom was left stranded on 45* but had helped Brook attain 2 batting points which had looked most unlikely 16 overs earlier.
Brook showed great fight in this game, pulling back a lightning start and digging in when the chips were down but need to improve their catching and their occupation of the crease if they are to compete in the games to come.
Brook finished on 137 all out from 31.5 overs.
Praise should also be given to 11 year old Ben Atkins who did the book and made it look easy.
