Bolt's 48 not out gets 4's back to winning ways

A 4's team brimming with youth and experience produced a convincing performance in a comprehensive victory at Raphael's Park on Saturday.
Winning the toss and choosing to field paid immediate dividends as Darren Boland leapt like a frolicking dolphin at first slip to hold on to a fine delivery from u15 opening bowler George Smith.Smith then struck again in his second over as his away swing tempted the number 3 bat to float up an easy catch to Ted Ivory at point. A period of consolidation followed as Athletic stalwart Lawrence Weeks hit a couple of boundaries but he soon fell to first change bowler Krishan Kumar who conceded just 4 runs from his 5 over spell.
Leonard Thoufick re-entered the attack, following an unsuccessful spell at the other end,and nabbed a brace in a fine six over spell of away swing bowling.
Ted Ivory was next to bowl and his reward for a mature and accurate spell was a wicket thanks to a Andrew Pauling catch at mid wicket.
Spin twins Pauling and Bobby Granger were unsuccessful but kept runs down although some sloppiness in the field at this time caused one of Bolt's famous rockets to be unleashed.
Owen Elsom after a tight opening spell returned and kept on the pressure as he went for just 6 runs in his last 3 overs and despite deceiving both batsman and keeper with a slower ball did not deceive Darren Boland who chased down the ball and returned it to Steve Rooke to whip off the bails. Elsom then finally got his reward for a tight spell off the very last ball of the innings as he caught an edge that Steve Rooke acrobatically took to leave Athletic on 89-8 from their allotted 40 overs. James Johnson carried his bat for 37* in an overcautious innings.
Brook bowling
Smith 4-1-7-2
Elsom 8-3-14-1
Kumar 5-1-4-1
Thoufick 8-4-15-2
Pauling 5-1-11-0
Granger 5-0-17-0
Ivory 5-0-18-1
After an al fresco tea Brook's Rooke brothers set about the target with gusto, Steve smashing a full toss way into the undergrowth that no amount of rummaging could locate. But after this maximum and a couple of other lusty blows he then fell for 16 in the 6th over with the score on 40.
This brought 13 year old George Sleight to the crease and he batted sensibly in a partnership of 30 with his skipper before he fell for 13.
Darren Boland came to the crease confidently, as this was the ground where he made his maiden 50 for the club back in 2013, but if Bolt's rocket had been heard back at May and Baker as many claim it had, then Bolands cry of despair must have been heard in Chelmsford as he was bowled first ball by the pick of the home teams attack 13 year old Alex Thomas who nabbed 3 -22 from his permitted 5 overs
Krishan Kumar successfully saw off the hat trick ball and helped the skipper past the target of 90 in 17.3 overs, Bolt's contribution being 48 at just under a run a ball with 6 boundaries. This victory keeps Brook in second place behind a rampant Rankins who recorded their 11th straight victory. Next game for the 4's is at home to South Woodham Ferrers.
