4ths Overcome Weary Rayleigh

After losing the toss, Goresbrook’s 4th string were invited to bat first on a damp track at the M & B Annex Ground on Saturday. Opener Steve Rooke again demonstrated his importance to the team occupying the crease for the entire duration of his sides 40 over entitlement, finding the rope on 15 occasions in a superb, unbeaten 95. Rooke initially received staunch support from Atif Ali - the left hander stroking 7 boundaries on his way to an excellent 41 as the pair posted an opening stand of 119. Billy Parnell provided the fireworks late in the innings hitting 3 fours and one huge maximum in an entertaining knock of 24 as ‘Brook closed on 191 for 3 with Walker the pick of the Rayleigh attack returning 2 for 24 .

After the tea interval, Joe Barwick made early inroads into the visiting batting with the new ball as he claimed the scalps of 3 victims at a cost of 19 from 7 excellent overs. Turner arrested the slump with the willow with a patient 26 but Ricci Parnell was introduced as second change and his economical 8 over spell yielded 2 wickets and just 6 runs to put the hosts in the driving seat. Spinner, Andrew Pauling bagged a brace of victims in a tidy spell of 2 for 28 whilst colts prospects Frankie Boland, Bobby Granger and George Smith caught the eye with a wicket apiece as ‘Brook eased home by 77 runs.
