Aythorpe Roding U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 18/7/10

Goresbrook 115 for 8 lost to AR 116 for 3 by 7 wickets

Aythorpe Rodings Under 16’s booked their quarter final place with a commanding 7 wicket win over Goresbrook at the picturesque Roundbush Green on Sunday. After winning the toss ‘Brook skipper Jack Simmons elected to bat first on a hard dry track but saw opening partner Connor Elliott depart in the first over. Simmons found the rope on five occasions on his way to an enterprising knock of 26 receiving excellent support from Billy Chapman (18), Daryl Forward (10) and a gritty 15 in 49 minutes from Lewis Greene. The hosts spin triumvirate of Chris George (2 for 14), George Halls (2 for 21) and Max Malins (1 for 14) conceded just 49 runs from their 24 overs combined to render boundaries a rarity as the hosts turned the screw. Goresbrook’s tail wagged as Bradley Reed (9 not) and Joe Barwick (7 not) took the visitors past three figures but that total of 115 for 8 looked distinctly under par in the conditions.

After the tea interval, the home side started brightly before Sam Gravatt (13) was clean bowled by Daryl Forward. Fellow opener Rob Hyams took up the baton and was going nicely on 22 before returning a sharp catch to spinner Jamie Sutton and Sutton (2 for 30) was again on the mark as Henry Woolett holed out to Liam Gallagher after making 13. At 76 for 3 there were to be no further hiccups for the home side as Will Malins announced his entry with a huge six and went on to add 3 fours and another maximum in a hard hitting, unbeaten 38. At the other end Liam Keeney supported with an excellent undefeated 14 as the pair led their side across the winning line with seven wickets and 17 overs to spare.

Broomfield U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 11/7/10

Goresbrook 187 for 7 beat Broomfield 153 all out by 34 runs

Goresbrook’s Under 16’s came through a tough assignment at the picturesque Brooklands on Sunday. After winning the toss ‘Brook skipper Jack Simmons must have been rueing his decision to bat first as pacemen Luke Farrow and Scott Fisher were firing on all cylinders. At 8 for 2 Simmons joined Conor Elliott at the crease and the pair batted sensibly to restore some stability to the visitors innings. Simmons was the first to depart after contributing an excellent 27 in a third wicket partnership of 64. Elliott was in glorious form with the willow punishing any loose offerings and fell to a sharp catch from Hills after fashioning 7 fours and one maximum before departing for a superb 57. Daryl Forward stepped up to the plate and struck 8 fours and one huge six as he entertained the crowd with a compelling unbeaten 57. Jamie Sutton added 13 but the returning Fisher (3 for 28) and Farrow (2 for 34) backed up by the economical Jack Heapy (2 for 18 from 7) restricted the visitors to a par score of 187 for 7 on an excellent track.

After the tea interval, the Dagenham side were given the ideal fillip as Joe Barwick had openers Jack Heapy (0) and skipper Aaron Eglin (1) back in the pavilion early in the proceedings. Luke Farrow found the rope four times in an eye catching 17 before edging Forward behind to Simmons and when Barwick bowled Fisher for 8 the writing was on the wall for the hosts at 32 for 4. Jack Copeman (18) and Jacob Spindler (11) led the recovery but spinner Jamie Sutton (2 for 21) and seamer Aiden Orton (2 for 27) bowled intelligently to keep the visitors in the ascendancy. Broomfield did not throw in the towel and had Elliott Cowell and Josh Hills to thank for a spirited revival. Cowell demonstrated a maturity beyond his years as initial caution gave way to confident strokeplay as the youngster accumulated 44 before departing after a 67 minute stay at the crease. Hills batting at ten proved a thorn in Goresbrook’s side with a battling, unbeaten 17 but the visitors held on for a satisfying 34 run victory in a competitive but sporting encounter.

Goresbrook U16 v  Bentley U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 6/6/10

Bentley 130 all out lost to Goresbrook 131 for 7 by 3 wickets

Bentley were asked to bat first by Goresbrook stand-in skipper Billy Chapman and from the outset 13 year old debutant Liam Addison had the Bentley batsmen in all sorts of trouble. Addison bowled a fine 5 over spell claiming 3 wickets for 32 runs, with the majority of those being streaky edges through the slips. Luke Read (5 overs, 0 for 8) and Matthew Parker (5 overs, 1 for 19) continued the good work, bowling consistent tight spells. However it was the introduction of 13 year old Shane Barwick and leg spinner Jamie Sutton that really turned the game Goresbrook's way. Barwick's brilliant 5 over spell yielded 3 wickets for only 7 runs and Sutton claimed 2 wickets for just 25 runs, the pair ripping the heart out of the Bentley middle order from which they never recovered as the innings ended for a below par 130 all out after 35.2 overs.

The Goresbrook reply got off to an excellent start as Read and Chapman steadily built a partnership. However the loss of Chapman (17) and Read (31) sparked a middle order collapse with a further five wickets falling before the score reached 100. This being due to a combination of good bowling and poor shot selection. The introduction of ever-reliable Matthew Friend however, saw him steady the ship with a fine 27 not out, and partnered by Parker (0 not out), guided Goresbrook home to 131 for 7 after 31.4 overs leaving them winners by 3 wickets.

Hutton U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Mon 31/5/10

Hutton 139 all out lost to Goresbrook 140 for 5 by 5 wickets

Goresbrook skipper Jack Simmons lost the toss and was invited to field first with the sky decidedly overcast. Matthew Friend and Daryl Forward opened the bowling and both bowled good tight spells to limit the Hutton side to just 25 runs in the first 10 overs. Matthew Parker then took on the mantle and proceeded to decimate the top order taking four wickets for 7 runs after 6 excellent overs. Whilst all this was going on, Mowl batted steadily as wickets tumbled around him. He cruised to 49 until he was undone by a cracking delivery from 13 year old Bobby Gaymer, who claimed 2 wickets in his 2 over spell. Luke Read (1 for 38) and Billy Chapman (2 for 17) finished off the tail as the home sides innings closed on 139 all out after 34.5 overs, to complete a great fielding and bowling effort by the Goresbrook youngsters.

If the Goresbrook batsmen thought chasing 140 to win was going to be a cakewalk, they were soon re-thinking as they found themselves five wickets down for just 13 runs by the time the tenth over had been bowled. However Matthew Friend and Jamie Sutton brought calm heads to the crease and they slowly but surely rebuilt the innings, playing sensible thoughtful cricket, Both finished 61 not out and 45 not out respectively, to see Goresbrook home to 140 for a 5 wicket win.

Colchester & East Essex U17  v  Goresbrook U17   Friendly   Fri 4/6/10

Colchester & EE 238 all out lost to Goresbrook 239 for 4 by 6 wickets

On a searingly hot day at Castle Park Goresbrook skipper Jordan Calverley lost the toss and was sent into the field. Din and Sinfield opened the bowling and were loose with the new ball, as Grace and Dale opened in fine fashion. Hussein and Calverley came on and they could not stem the flow of runs either, as Colchester amassed 101 runs in the 15 over Powerplay.  Ramduth and Harris were then brought on to tighten things up, but on a great track both failed to make any in-roads. Calverley then called on Under 13 captain Shane Barwick to bowl his seamers and he bowled a superb 5 over spell taking 3 wickets at a cost of just 13 runs. He was then followed by 17 year old Shaun Ross and he carried on the fine work taking 3 for 13 also in 5 overs, as 'Brook dragged the game back well. Hussein (1 for 33 in 6 overs) and Din (1 for 49 in 6.5 overs) were the other wicket takers along with two fine run outs. 'Brook kept the homesters down to 238 from their 45 overs , bowling them out in fact with 2 overs to spare.

In reply, it was vital the visitors got off to a fine start but opener Jordan Harris fell cheaply for 4 playing all around a straight ball, Hussein fell for 9 soon after as things were not looking good. However this brought skipper Jordan Calverley to the crease to join opener Joe Curley where they then produced a fantastic 140 partnership in just 26 overs. It was a great effort and got 'Brook right back in with a chance. Curley was then adjudged lbw for a fine 63, his knock included eight fours and lasted 84 balls. Calverley went on to record a superb ton, which took his side to the brink of victory. He hit fifteen 4's and one 6, his innings lasted just 102 balls as he finally fell for 104. Lee Ramduth (20 not out) and Kaynal Messenger (18 not out) saw Goresbrook  through to victory with just more than 3 overs to spare by 6 wickets, it was a superb team performance.

Goresbrook  manager David Whisker added; "To come to a place like this and win so convincingly was brilliant." "Special praise to Shane and Shaun in the bowling department , Billy Chapman behind the stumps who was superb and didn’t let through a single bye, and all the batsmen with Jordan's ton a great and mature knock being the pick".

Goresbrook U16  v  Harlow Town U16   Matchplay Comp   Mon 3/5/10

Goresbrook 179 for 6 beat Harlow Town 62 all out by 117 runs

Goresbrook elected to bat first in this latest Matchplay encounter and from the outset looked to be firmly in control. The loss of skipper Jack Simmons (10) certainly did not halt the momentum as opener Luke Read and Matthew Friend dispatched the Town bowling to all parts as they showed off  their fine all-round batting skills. Friend was finally out stumped for 32 whilst Read carried his bat through the innings to record a fine 68 not out. 'Brook cruised to a very competitive 179 for 6 from their 40 overs.

The Harlow reply ended up being a scene of utter carnage as opening bowler Friend ran amok through the batting card, bowling quick and accurate deliveries that the batsmen had no answer for. Friend finished his spell with figures of 7 overs, 5 maidens, 6 for 2, a colts bowling record for the club. With 8 wickets down and the score on 21 the Goresbrook bowlers took their foot off the gas and the Town number nine Farmer, played a superb innings to restore  some respectability to the innings. His 27 was the only double figure score. Farmer's departure, however, saw the innings come to an end on 62 to leave Goresbrook winners by a commanding 117 runs.

Shenfield U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 9/5/10

Goresbrook 155 for 9 lost to Shenfield 156 for 6 by 4 wickets

Having to field a young generally inexperienced side due to football commitments, Goresbrook went into this latest round of the Matchplay competition not fully confident of gaining victory. Goresbrook skipper Jack Simmons won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening with himself and Conor Elliot they got off to solid start adding 38 before the first wicket fell, Simmons caught for 12. Elliot continued the good work but his demise for 21 led to a mini collapse and 'Brook found themselves 71 for 4. However Matthew Friend (29), Josh Townsend (17) and Jamie Sutton (31) provided a middle order recovery. That and some wayward bowling helped 'Brook to finish on a creditable 155 for 9 from their 40 overs.

In reply Shenfield got off to a stuttering start losing two wickets with the score on only 26. The good work was undone however by more wayward bowling with wide after wide being conceded, allowing the batsmen time to settle their nerves at the crease. With Shenfield cruising to the target the introduction of leg spinner Jamie Sutton turned the game back towards Goresbrook. His 3 wickets caused panic in the Shenfield ranks, however no other bowler could back up Sutton's efforts and the home team got to the required score in the 26th over for the loss of 6 wickets, to claim a 4 wicket win. It was a creditable performance by a side lacking four of its best players and pride can be taken from the efforts of all the Goresbrook lads.

Hornchurch U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Friendly   Sun 25/4/10

Goresbrook 267 for 9 beat Hornchurch 125 all out by 142 runs

Goresbrook U16's began their season with a morale boasting win against  a good, well organised Hornchurch side. The home team won the toss and elected to field first. They had early success claiming two wickets with the score on 33. However the introduction of Afzal Hussain turned the innings around. He played excellently, stroking eleven 4's on his way to a fine 93. He was ably supported by opener Jordan Harris (39 no). A fine late order knock of 68 not out from Matthew Friend helped 'Brook to post an imposing score of 267 for 9 from their 40 overs.

In reply, the home side were never up with the rate as the Goresbrook attack all bowled accurate, disciplined line and length deliveries. With Hornchurch losing wickets at regular intervals the result was never in doubt. Jacobs (22), Tiwari (23), Clark (17) and Nisiri (18) provided some resistance but Jamie Sutton (3 for 38), Daryl Forward (2 for 9) and two sharp run-outs provided breakthroughs at the right time, the innings closing on 125 all out, leaving Goresbrook winners by 142 runs.
