Goresbrook U16  v  Fives & Heronians U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 10/7/11

Fives 122 all out lost to Goresbrook 123 for 3 by 7 wickets

Goresbrook are now one game away from a remarkable achievement in the Matchplay Essex Tournament, as a win next Sunday against Leyton County should see them qualify for the quarter finals. 'Brook lost the toss and Fives looked to get off to a good start after deciding to bat first, but opening bowlers  Addison and Forward had other ideas as they bowled beautifully in tandem as runs were hard to come by. Bobby Gaymer then carried on the fine work swinging the ball and also causing problems. Spin twins Billy Smith and Shane Barwick then joined the fray and things carried on in the same vein. Smith took his 100th wicket for the colt section as he produced figures of 1 for 31 from 8 overs. Barwick, back from a two week break, bowled superbly taking 4 for 22 from 8 overs including 2 maidens, before openers Forward and Addison returned to the attack to finish off the Fives batting line up. Forward ending on 3 for 14 from 7 overs and Addison 2 for 20 from 6.1 over’s as Fives were kept to just 122 all out in 37.1 overs. James Sibley scored 49 for Fives and was top scorer.

In reply, 'Brook lost Lewis Greene early for 1 and when Ryan Wells fell for 11 with the score on 29, Fives felt they were back in the game, but Shane Barwick joined Luke Read and they took the game away from Fives as they cruised to 91 before Barwick fell for 19. Bobby Gaymer then joined Read and they saw 'Brook through to a comfortable 7 wicket victory, Read ending on a superb unbeaten 75 which included 10 boundaries and lasted 97 balls. This left the Goresbrook side in with a fighting chance of making it through to the quarter finals which would be a remarkable achievement for such a young team.

Goresbrook U16  v  Saffron Walden U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 3/7/11

Goresbrook 141 all out beat Saffron Walden 117 all out by 24 runs

Goresbrook’s Captain Daryl Forward won the toss for the first time this season and elected to bat.  On a sun baked wicket the runs were scored at a good rate, but as per the last couple of games, wickets fell at regular intervals. Only five of 'Brook's players made double figures, Read (10), Greene (18), Forward (28), Gaymer (25) and Addison (11), in a total of 141.

Safron Walden began the chase in a patient fashion but the 'Brook bowlers were in a miserly mood and wickets fell as a reward.  A notable knock of 49 from Ormsby wasn’t enough to prevent a defeat for Walden.  4 wickets for Daryl Forward at a cost of 28, plus two wickets each for Luke Read and Billy Smith for 12 and 14 respectively, saw off the visitors.

Gidea Park & Romford U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 26/6/11

Gidea Park & Romford 227 for 4 beat Goresbrook 179 all out by 48 runs

Goresbrook lost an important toss and were asked to field by their hosts in the searing, early afternoon heat. On a flat track the Gidea Park batsmen built a good score of 227 for 4, with Hewitt (82) and Donnelly (88) top scoring. 'Brook’s bowlers Addison, Gaymer, Forward and Read took a wicket each.

In reply, 'Brook were the victims of two early wickets, Wells out caught behind and Greene run out. A captain's knock was called for as Daryl Forward came to the crease with 'Brook on 41 for 4. He duly obliged with a fine innings of 72, with support from Bobby Gaymer (33) and Joel Oliver (20), showing the lads fighting spirit but the run chase was a bridge too far as the wickets fell.

Wanstead U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 19/6/11

Goresbrook 69 all out lost to Wanstead 74 for 3 by 7 wickets

Goresbrook’s fine run came to an abrupt end as they were beaten convincingly by a powerful Wanstead side. On a very green but flat looking wicket the toss was always going to be vital and Goresbrook duly lost it. Wanstead put 'Brook into bat and things couldn’t have got off to a worse start when in-form opener Luke Read went for just 1 run. Bobby Gaymer hung around for 20 balls but was then the next scalp as he went for a duck. Shane Barwick started to settle in and began to score but wickets kept falling, Wells (3) and Greene (2) went and then Barwick fell for 21 leaving 'Brook tottering on 34 for 5. Liam Addison battled hard but he kept losing partners as Forward (8), Joel Oliver (0) and Stuart Greaves (5) all went. Brad Reed then took on a suicidal run and he went for 5 leaving Addison to be joined by Billy Smith, but Addison fell for a dogged 14 in only 24th over of the allotted 40 and 'Brook ended on a paltry 69 all out. Kazmi (3 for 11) and Wade (3 for 24) were the pick of the attack.

In reply 'Brook did get some respect back as they bowled and fielded with quality and enthusiasm. Spinners Shane Barwick and Billy Smith bowled well taking 1 for 29 in 8 overs and 1 for 10 in 4 overs respectively. Liam Addison then took a wicket but it was not to be as there were just not enough runs to defend, Wanstead winning in the 18thover.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "I think we were taught a real lesson today, but it’s all good experience for the future as most of our team are under 14’s and playing against a powerful team like Wanstead who are made up of 16 year olds, it was never going to be easy. We will brush this defeat under the carpet now and start again with the next match".

Goresbrook U16  v  Broomfield U16   Matchplay Comp   Mon 30/5/11

Goresbrook 243 for 3 beat Broomfield 200 all out by 43 runs

Goresbrook won the toss and decided to bat first on a flat looking home track at the May and Baker venue. Going into the game in second place 'Brook were looking to maintain their early season form. It wasn’t going to be easy as the Broomfield team were all 16 year olds, where the young 'Brook side were made up of eight 14 year olds one 15 year old and one 16 year old and were giving away a lot in power and size.

'Brook lost Bobby Gaymer early on for 3 but after that the runs came freely, in-form Luke Read scoring with ease as he struck boundary after boundary. Shane Barwick was not in his normal good touch but battled on well and the pair put on 81 before Barwick fell for a dogged 28. Debutant Ryan Wells then joined Read and runs continued to come. Read went past 50 in 56 balls and then past the magical ton in just 96 balls, he then went on to pass the club’s highest individual colts score record as he ended up on 136 not out. His mammoth stay included an incredible 21 fours and lasted 124 balls and 144 minutes. Meanwhile at the other end Wells struck a superb 45 off just 39 balls before he was caught off of the penultimate delivery of the innings as the total ended on 246 for 3.

In reply, Broomfield started positively against some lively new ball bowling from Forward and Addison, getting to 41 off 9 overs, but then spin twins Shane Barwick and Billy Smith came on and in the next 4 over’s only 3 runs were scored which got Brook right on top. With rain threatening it was important 'Brook kept their opponents behind the run rate required. Barwick bowled his 8 overs taking 1 for 31 including 2 maidens and Billy Smith bowled 7 overs taking 1 for 37 including 1 maiden. Bobby Gaymer then came into the attack and bowled a fine spell taking 3 for 31 in 6 overs as the powerful Broomfield side really went for the big shots. Ausman Ginai took 2 for 4 in 1 over, whilst opening pair Liam Addison (1 for 40 from 8 overs) and skipper Daryl Forward (1 for 22 from 7.5 overs) finished off the match to see 'Brook through to a comfortable victory in the end. It was a fine display in the field in the main with good catches being taken by Gaymer, Oliver and Forward and fine run out also by Gaymer. This result leaves Brook in second place in the group with the next game against top of the table Wanstead.

Sth Woodford U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 15/5/11

Sth Woodford 126 all out lost to Goresbrook 127 for 9 by 1 wicket

Goresbrook won a classic match at Highfield Rd on Sunday by the narrowest margin of one wicket. South Woodford won the toss and elected to bat and started off in positive fashion against openers Daryl Forward and Liam Addison, with Iqbal in fine form. However when Bobby Gaymer replaced Forward he took the opener for 33 with a good catch by Ben Irving with the score on 45. Liam Addison bowled well however and ended with 0 for 13 from his 5 overs. But the game changed when spin was brought into the attack, Billy Smith (3 for 28, 8 overs), Shane Barwick (3 for 29, 7 overs) and Ben Irving (3 for 3) at the death blew away the Woodford order as they struggled to just 126 all out after 30 overs.

In reply, opener Ausman Ginai fell for a golden duck in the first over and Bobby Gaymer fell soon after for 8 with the score on just 12. This brought 'Brook’s Shane Barwick to the crease to join Luke Read and they settled nerves, but Read fell to a full toss when on 15 and then Joel Oliver fell quickly for 1 as the game began to swing Woodford's way. Barwick kept playing sensibly but Ben Irving was out for 7 and Ross McCarthy for 5 as now 'Brook were in dire trouble and when Barwick fell for 23 the score was just 69 for 7. Skipper Daryl Forward and fellow opening bowler Liam Addison then put on a superb partnership which seemed to bring victory from the jaws of defeat as the score got to 122, but then disaster struck as both players ended up at the same end in a mix up, which resulted in Daryl Forward run out for 23. Addison then holed out for 23 also as 'Brook were now 123 for 9 with Brad Reed and Billy Smith at the crease. Reed struck the ball down the ground and it looked all over but the ball fell short of the rope and they only managed 2 runs, so 'Brook were still 1 run behind. Smith then batted out a maiden against the returning and impressive Iqbal who finished on 4 for 10. The drama then got more tense as Woodford had to bring on a new bowler as they had not worked out their attack correctly and Aamer bowled to Reed who majestically struck the second ball of the over through the covers and the pair scrambled the two runs required to give a famous victory for Goresbrook’s young side. It was a fantastic team effort and gives them 2 wins from 3 games so far.

Goresbrook U16  v  Buckhurst Hill U16   Matchplay Comp   Sun 8/5/11

Goresbrook 302 all out beat Buckhurst Hill 64 all out by 238 runs

Goresbrook produced a scintillating performance to crush Buckhurst Hill in the 2nd round of Matchplay matches. After winning the toss 'Brook were straight into their scoring rhythm with 15 year old Luke Read in fine fettle, the problem was wickets were going in quick fashion at the other end too as Bobby Gaymer (2), Brad Reed (0), Shane Barwick (13), Ben Irving (4) and Liam Addison (5), all fell in the first 12 overs. The score had rattled along to 86 when 14 year old Joel Oliver joined Read and this produced a record partnership for the clubs fifth wicket. They added 121 in 11 overs with both batsmen making their first ever tons. Read made his 101 in 71 balls, striking the boundary rope on 16 occasions. Joel Oliver hit 100 in 71 balls, his knock included 17 boundaries. After they fell Daryl Forward hit a quickfire 29 and Ausman Ginai 14 not out as 'Brook plundered 302 all out and only used 33.3 out of the 40 overs. John Armstrong took 3 for 32 for Buckhurst Hill.

In reply, Hill were never in the hunt as Daryl Forward and Liam Addison both bowled superbly with the new ball. Forward bowled six overs and went for just 10 runs and Liam Addison took 2 for 6 in his six overs. After that, spin twins Billy Smith and Shane Barwick were also in good form, Smith taking 2 for 12 in 6 overs and Barwick 1 for 9 in his 6 overs, as Buckhurst Hill were totally outclassed. The fielding was also sharp as two run outs were made with good throws from Brad Reed and Bobby Gaymer, Gaymer then came on to polish off the tail taking 2 for 3 in two overs, as the visitor’s were skittled out for just 64 giving a victory margin of 238 runs.

Manager Scott Barwick added, "It was a comfortable win today and it was also great to see Luke and Joel hit their maiden tons and do it in such positive fashion". "We then bowled and fielded really well which bodes well for the future, tougher matches in the group".

Bentley U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Matchplay Comp   Mon 2/5/11

Bentley 171 for 6 beat Goresbrook 158 all out by 13 runs

Bentley won the toss and elected to bat in this first group match of the new season. Goresbrook went into the game with just one Under 16 player, two Under 15 ‘s and no less than eight Under 14’s, so it was always going to be a baptism of fire. Skipper Daryl Forward was in fine form with the ball taking out both Bentley openers early on and was backed up admirably by seamers Luke Read, who had figures of 0 for 17 from 6 overs, Bobby Gaymer 1 for 13 from 5 overs plus spinners Billy Smith who took 1 for 29 in his allotted 8 overs and Shane Barwick 1 for 17 from 6 overs. Forward ended with fine figures of 3 for 18, but with 140 looking the maximum Bentley would muster, 'Brook let them off the hook at the death and allowed them to set a decent 171 for 6 from their 40 overs. Dave Jessop (31) was the pick of the Bentley batsmen.

In reply, things couldn’t have started any worse for the visitors as Luke Read (1), Bobby Gaymer (1) and Brad Reed (0) all fell with the score only reaching 7. A mini fight-back ensued with Ben Irving joining Shane Barwick as they started to nudge the ball about and get the scoreboard ticking over. The score had reached 44 when Irving was bowled for a dogged 15, but things got even worse when Daryl Forward was blown up first ball and now 'Brook were in all sorts of bother at 44 for 5. When Joel Oliver fell for 2 with the score on 67 for 6 the game looked over, but 14 year old Liam Addison joined Barwick and the two started to show how could they play together, nicking runs and also hitting the odd boundary. Addison had helped Barwick put on 62 before he went for 13, but 'Brook were now thinking an unlikely victory could be on. 13 year old Barwick was in majestic form totally belying his age as he crashed past 50 and with the help of Ross McCarthy (6) and Ausman Giani (5), Barwick managed to get the runs to within 18 off the last 2 overs. However, Barwick fell in the deep going for the big shot and went for a fantastic 81, his marathon knock had lasted 133 balls and included 9 fours, leaving the field to a well deserved standing ovation from both on and off the field. 'Brook ended up just 18 runs short of victory in the end being bowled out for 158 in 39.3 over’s.

Coach Jordan Harris added, "That was a great effort from such a young Goresbrook side, there was positives and a few minuses today but overall it was a pleasing performance". "We lost the game in the last 5 or 6 overs of their innings and we also gave away 32 extra’s today which is not like us, so there is plenty to work at on the training ground".

Upminster U16  v  Goresbrook U16   Friendly   Fri 29/4/11

Goresbrook 164 for 3 beat Upminster 139 for 7 by 25 runs

Both teams warmed up for the big Matchplay competition with a friendly that produced a really good workout for both sides. Goresbrook won the toss and decided to bat in this 30 over match. Luke Read and Bobby Gaymer looked very solid but could only manage 20 runs in the first 10 overs against some very tidy bowling. Gaymer fell for 8 and Read fell for 13 bringing together 13 year old Shane Barwick and Jordan Calverley. They upped the tempo gradually and the run rate started to pick up. Calverley struck four 4’s and three 6's in his unbeaten 45 and Barwick hit three 4’s and one 6 in his unbeaten 34 before both batsmen were retired. Ben Irving 14, Joel Oliver 13 not out  and Liam Addison 14 not out chipped in during the closing seven overs as 'Brook amassed a decent 164 for 3 in their allotted 30 overs .

In reply Daryl Forward bowled a superb opening spell going for just 1 run in 4 tight overs and talking 1 wicket. Billy Smith bowled 5 overs of spin and went for 20 runs taking 2 wickets and he looked in good touch. Jordan Harris took 3 for 12 in 5 overs and both he and Smith should have had more as Shane Barwick had one blatant catch and two stumpings turned down that all looked out, as he put in a very good performance with the gloves. Luke Read was the only other bowler to take a wicket as he had figures of 1 for 20 as 'Brook eased to a comfortable victory in the end by the margin of 25 runs, a good start before the first Matchplay match on Monday May 2nd at Bentley cc.
