Under 13 Colts Match Reports 2009

Report on Goresbrook's U13's 2009 season by Scott Barwick

We entered four big competitions this season which meant lots and lots of games for the boys, and although we fell just short of winning anything or getting to the latter stages of the Peter Coe and Len Stentisford Cups, we performed admirably. In fact the most prestigious competition in Essex at Under 13 level was won by Woodford Wells whom we lost to by the narrowest of margins earlier in the season - a game in which we should have won.

We had a massive 31 games in which only 9 were lost, a really great achievement by a bunch of local hard working Dagenham and Barking lads. The team was made up of nearly all under 12 players, so 80% of our squad will be eligible again for the 13's next season. We are however keen to invite any budding youngsters in the area to come and join in and participate next year.

We got through the local rounds of the Havering Cup which sent us into a national competition which we managed to get through two more rounds before falling to a powerful side in Fives and Heronians. In the Len Stentisford Cup we were in a challenging group and only just managed to qualify through to the knockout stage. In the big one, the Peter Coe Cup, we did admirably after coming up against the two big boys in the first two games of our group, namely Braintree and Brentwood. We lost both but won all our other games in the group, again missing out on qualification.

The closest we came to winning  a cup was in the Havering League. We won all our games in the league along with Upminster 'A' before clashing in a winners-take-all match against them at the end of the campaign. We fell just short on the day and disappointingly ended up runners up.

On a individual note, three players had superb seasons with records a plenty falling. 12 year old Billy Smith took a record 36 wickets in a season for the age group, including three 5-wicket plus hauls all in cup games, and in the game versus a powerful Springfield side he took a colts record 6 for 9, a real prospect for the future. Luke Read opened the batting for the team and amassed a fantastic 511 runs, an incredible achievement along with being a regular for the ECCB Metropolitan District U13 side, he is also a top wicket keeper. Lastly skipper Shane Barwick has had a mind boggling season this year. At just 12 years of age he has scored 451 runs for the U13's as well as 31 wickets and 15 catches. He also broke the club record at adult level for the youngest person ever to score a ton, scoring 105 runs for the 4th XI team in early August at just 12 years and 3 months old. In total, he has scored 300 plus runs in all for the adults. He finished the season in fine style recently making his debut for the ECCB Metropolitan  District U13 side and made an unbeaten 51 in the process as well as scoring 30 for Goresbrook's second XI in a recent friendly .

All are top prospects and there are others in the shape of Liam Addison who is a quality seam bowling prospect and who reached the last stage of the County U12 trials at the County Ground along with Barwick. Ben Irving is a potential top class batsman in the making, Lewis Greene played rarely but was superb with the ball in his hand   and Chris Dove has the potential to be a great all-rounder in time. Jimmy Woodhouse has improved all season with bat and ball and can become very good also, plus Callum Shepherd has improved all season bowling his off breaks. The list goes on and on, and with the addition of some new blood we can challenge for trophyies next season.

Met District 187 for 0 beat Upminster 103 all out by 84 runs

Goresbrook were represented in this ECCB Metropolitan District representative side by skipper for the day 13 year old Luke Read and 12 year old Shane Barwick, in this end of season friendly at Upminster Park. Upminster put the Met side into bat and they  amassed 187 for 0 in their 30 overs with Shane Barwick hitting an unbeaten 51 on his debut, before being retired. Luke Read hit 9 not out as Goresbrook's boys did the club proud. Upminster were rolled over for just over a hundred, with Read superb behind the stumps. Barwick did not bowl after his batting exploits, but fielded well.

Upminster 'B' U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Havering League   Sun 6/9/09

Goresbrook 118 for 6 beat Upminster 94 for 6 by 28 runs

In their last game of the season Goresbrook's youngsters finished the campaign with a convincing win against local rivals Upminster. Goresbrook were put into bat and were up against the same bowling attack that caused them so many problems in the title decider the week before, when they played Upminster's A side. But determined to finish the season with a bang and consolidate second place in the league, 'Brook produced a superb batting performance. After losing Dove early on for 2, 'Brooks two top batsmen of the season got together and were both in good form. Barwick passed 450 runs for the season scoring 16 and Luke Read passed 500 runs for the season scoring a fine unbeaten 30. The two were also backed up well by Ben Irving who scored 16, Liam Addison 10 and a season's best 19 from Jimmy Woodhouse enabling 'Brook to post a fine 118 from their 20 overs.

In reply Liam Addison was on fire early on blitzing through the Upminster early order taking 3 for 3 in 3 overs. Shane Barwick bowled 4 overs for just 9 runs finishing the season on 31 wickets, whilst Billy Smith came into the attack and bowled with his usual aplomb taking 2 for 22. Smith, the spin king, ending the season with a remarkable 36 wickets and he also ended up the club's leading wicket taker for the season. Chris Dove took 1 for 30 and great catches were taken by Bobby Gaymer,  Chris Dove and Luke Read who also took a sharp stumping as 'Brook ended up strolling to victory by 28 runs.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "It was great to end the season on such a high note with an impressive victory. I would also like to add it has been a total pleasure to manage such a great set of lads this season, who give it their all and turn up week after week for training and matches".

Goresbrook U13  v  Upminster 'A' U13   Havering League   Sun 30/8/09

Upminster 92 all out beat Goresbrook 63 all out by 29 runs

Goresbrook met Upminster 'A' in a 'winner take all' showdown on Sunday and ended up falling slightly short. Upminster won the toss and batted first and 'Brook were yet again on top form as they always have been all season and got into the top order. Shane Barwick removed both openers in a pacy opening burst, Liam Addison also picked up a wicket as the score was 25 for 3. Bilton then arrived at the crease and produced the match winning innings. He was the only player to score double figures as he caressed the ball to all parts of the ground scoring 32 not out in 15 balls before retiring. Lewis Greene then came on to bowl a 'man of the match' winning spell. He bowled his 4 straight overs taking 4 wickets for just 9 runs, along with Jimmy Woodhouse who took 1 for 7 and the returning Liam Addison who took another wicket to finish with 2 for 38 in 4 overs. Upminster were all out for a very gettable 92.

In reply, Goresbrook's in-form pair of Luke Read and Shane Barwick were both out early for 4 and 8 respectively which was always going to make life tough against a superb visiting bowling attack. Wickets continued to tumble on regular occasions with Murphy, Crotch and Williams all taking a brace. Liam Addison was the only batsman to get into double figures in fact, he ended on 12 not out as 'Brook ended up 29 runs short being bowled out for just 63. So Goresbrook finish runners up, just falling short at the death yet again.

Belhus U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Friendly   Fri 28/8/09

Belhus 176 for 8 lost to Goresbrook 179 for 1 by 9 wickets

Belhus won the toss and elected to bat in this 35 over friendly and got off to a great start. When opener Pantelli fell the score was on 87 and he had made 33. Wickets then fell at regular intervals but the other opener Ben Kent stayed in and struck a career best knock of 86, his innings included 14 boundaries. However 'Brook bowled with great discipline as always and managed to keep Belhus down to 176 for 8 from their allotted overs. Shane Barwick (1 for 22 in 7 overs), Liam Addison (2 for 27 in 6 overs), Callum Shepherd (1 for 18 in 4 overs), Billy Smith (2 for 36) and Brad Reed (1 for 20) all all bowled well, and two smart catches were taken by Brad Reed and Luke Read.

In reply, 'Brook produced their best batting performance of the season. Chris Dove fell for 11 with the score on 40  then Shane Barwick  joined Luke Read and they produced a fantastic partnership. It lasted just 12 overs and amazingly produced 139 runs unbeaten, as the two boys plundered runs to all parts of the quaint ground. Luke Read smashed 87 not out in just 58 balls hitting 1 six and 14 fours and Shane Barwick hit 64 not out in just 36 balls hitting 1 six and 10 fours as 'Brook eased home with 12 overs to spare. It really was pure class from two very talented batsmen and hopefully they will carry this form into the championship decider against Upminster on Sunday as this team deserves to win a trophy this season.

Goresbrook U13  v  Hornchurch Athletic U13   Havering League   Sun 23/8/09

Goresbrook 113 for 6 beat Hornchurch Athletic 93 for 6 by 20 runs

In Goresbrook's penultimate league game of the season, 'Brook needed a victory to set up a winner takes all showdown with fierce local rivals Upminster next Sunday.

After winning the toss 'Brook decided to make first use of a flat wicket. Bobby Gaymer was out early for 0, his third in four matches but stability was brought back to the innings by Shane Barwick and Ben Irving. Irving fell for 13  and then Brad Reed was unluckily run out for 1. In-form Luke Read then joined skipper Barwick and the two scored freely before Barwick retired unbeaten on 30, his knock including three boundaries and lasted 29 balls. Read then fell for 20 and a minor collapse ensued, but 'Brook managed to scramble to 113 for 6 from their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Athletic made a real good attempt at the task set, especially after they were bowled out by 'Brook for just 14 earlier in the season. All of Goresbrook's bowlers bowled okay with Luke Read, Jimmy Woodhouse, Billy Smith and Joel Oliver all taking a wicket a piece. But there were catches dropped and some average fielding by a team who pride themselves normally on that part of the game, but an out of touch 'Brook side still managed to win by 20 runs in the end as Athletic ended on 93 for 6.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "It was nice to gain the victory, but we just weren't at the races today and that's the worst we have looked in the field this year. Maybe it was because of what happened in our previous meeting and we were a little bit lethargic thinking it would be a stroll. Lets hope we get back to our best next week in the big one".

Loughton U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Peter Coe Cup   Sunday 16/8/09

Loughton 150 for 9 lost to Goresbrook 154 for 7 by 3 wickets

Goresbrook won the toss and elected to field in this Peter Coe cup group match. 'Brook bowled well as per norm all season with Jimmy Woodhouse (2 for 8) and Callum Shepherd (3 for 16) being the pick of the visiting attack. Shane Barwick, Luke Read and Billy Smith also took a wicket as Loughton ended on 150 for 7 from their 30 overs.

In reply, 'Brook lost Chris Dove early for 1 before Shane Barwick joined Luke Read at the crease. The two star U13  players put on 50 runs without any fuss with Barwick looking confident after his debut ton the day before. Barwick was eventually bowled for 20 by a ball that crept along the floor, before Joel Oliver came in and hit a quick-fire 14. No one else made any significant contribution to support Luke Read until Jimmy Woodhouse settled the nerves and saw 'Brook through to a famous victory, finishing on 6 not out. Opener Luke Read hit a fantastic 71 not out in just 69 balls, his knock included one 6 and nine 4's an innings that belied his tender years. Goresbrook ended their Peter Coe cup campaign in 3rd place in a powerful group, which was a great effort by such a young side.

Walthamstow U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Len Stentisford Cup   Sun 9/8/09

Walthamstow 129 for 2 beat Goresbrook 110 all out by 19 runs

Skipper Luke Reed won the toss on a scorching hot summers morning and elected to field. Again the Gorsey lads were without several players but with the squad we have we can beat anyone. The two Walthamstow opening batsmen got their team off to what would be the perfect start they could have wished for with both batsmen making 30 not out, each playing very well indeed, The Goresbrook lads did not get their first wicket until the 16th over where Bobby Gaymer bowled a good line and length and Max taking a good catch with the gloves. Joel Oliver also picked up one wicket but that was it for Goresbrook as Walthamstow posted 129 for just 2 wickets  from their 20 overs. It should of been a lot more but the fielding today was one of the best of the season with everyone backing up and putting their bodies in the way to stop everything. The Walthamstow batsmen just did not give the Gorsey bowlers a sniff.

So usual openers Luke Reed and Ben Irving went out to try and do what the two Walthamstow batsmen did and both get 30 not out, but wickets tumbled and were given away as Ben Irving, Lee Morgan, Riley and Liam all fell early but it was Luke Reed once again with a brilliant 33 not out (retired) who played some wonderful cricket shots and is definitely one for the future. Bobby (11), Joel (16 not out) and Stuart (14 not out) gave their best efforts and batted very well also, but the total was just too big for the youngsters and Walthamstow won by 19 runs.

Goresbrook U13  v  Gidea Park & Romford U13   Peter Coe Cup   Sun 2/8/09

GP&R 100 all out lost to Goresbrook 103 for 7 by 3 wickets

After the rain we had on Saturday I never thought this game was going to be on but the pitch at the Annex ground held out very well. Luke Reed, Goresbrook's captain for today won the toss and elected to field first with a damp pitch and a slow outfield. The home side was without a few key players like captain Shaynal Barwick and the two spin kings Billy Smith and Callum Shepherd plus a few more, so victory was looking a difficult task for the Gorsey boys today. Captain Reed opened the bowling with himself and Liam Addison and it was the skipper who got the break-through clean bowling the opening batsman Harry Thompson out for just 5 runs. A few overs later Gidea Park were piling on the runs and a 35 wicket partnership took Parks on to 70 for 3, but Lewis Greene the best bowler of the day by far took 4 for 27 from 6 overs and got batsmen 2, 3 and 4 out and bowled very well. Young Brandon aged just 9 bowled his first over for the 13's and picked himself up a wicket and a crucial one at that getting Gidea's top batsmen out Matt for 22 runs. Jimmy Woodhouse also bowled very well taking 2 for 17 from 6 overs and 2 fine catches at slip which left Gidea Park 94 for 9. Then the skipper brought back his opening bowler Liam Addison who clean bowled the number 11 batsmen and Gidea Park ended up on exactly 3 figures; 100 all out.

So the inexperienced Gorsey lads had to chase 101 for victory, but usual openers Luke Reed and Ben Irving started amazingly well putting on 35 for the first wicket in just 4 overs, however Ben Irving with a quick-fire 19 got bowled by Thompson and wickets started to tumble. Bobby Gaymer (0), Luke Greene (0),  Max who played not a bad innings for just 3 runs trying to support opener Reed and Liam, and Riley also with ducks left Goresbrook struggling at 69 for 6 needing another 33 runs for victory. With Auzman at number 9 who was also making his debut, Brandon at number 10 and Ross Woodhouse who came in at very late notice at number 11 also making his first start of the season, victory looked like a long way from home. Enter Jimmy Woodhouse, who had to stick with opener Luke Reed and he did just that with a very good and thoughtful 10 not out. Him and Luke Reed put on a 7th wicket partnership of another 35, the 3rd such partnership of the game and taking Goresbrook to victory. Luke Reed, who needed a 4 with just 2 runs to win for his 50 was on strike and hit a lovely pull shot which just tickled over the line and I have to say as manager for the first time, it was the best piece of batting I had ever seen from a 13 year old, especially how he got there. He gave no chances away and did what was needed, a world class batting performance. Jimmy Woodhouse was exceptional today with a brilliant all-round performance with 2 wickets, 2 catches and 10 not out. And also Lewis Greene with a fantastic bowling display taking 4 superb wickets. Man of the match could of been anyone of these three players but the trophy this week has to go to Luke Reed for a great knock. Well done boys

Goresbrook U13  v  Springfield U13   Peter Coe Cup  Sun 26/7/09

Goresbrook 135 for 9 beat Springfield 97 all out by 38 runs

History was made at the May & Baker Annex ground on Sunday morning in this Peter Coe Cup group clash as the colt section record for bowling figures was beaten by Billy Smith.

The day started with Goresbrook winning the toss and deciding to make first use of a good looking flat pitch. Opener Bobby Gaymer was bowled first ball by Charlie Prudence which then brought skipper Shane Barwick and Ben Irving together. The pair batted sensibly and with class and the runs started to flow. They ended up putting on 63 before Irving fell for 30, his knock included five boundaries and lasted 30 balls. Barwick fell very quickly after to spinner Sam Brown for 26, he struck three boundaries and batted for 41 balls. 'Brook, missing key batsmen, put up a fine effort in the middle order with Liam Addison (10), Lewis Greene (16), Brad Reed (15) and Riley Brown (10) all chipping in to enable 'Brook to post a decent 135 for 9 from their 30 overs.

In reply, Springfield's top order got off to a flyer and the runs were coming freely wiith skipper Barwick quite expensive until he took a superb caught and bowled off Hitching to make the vital breakthrough. Liam Addison bowled superbly from the other end going for just 7 runs off of his 4 over spell. Lewis Greene making only his second appearance of the season bowled a beautiful spell of seam bowling taking 2 for 5 from 4 overs as 'Brook started to get back into the game, but it was the introduction of 12 year old Billy Smith that was to be the deciding factor in this match. The off-spinner bowled a fantastic spell that belied his tender years and the Royal Liberty schoolboy bowled 4.4 overs taking 6 wickets for just 9 runs, this being the best ever figures by a bowler in the colts section since the club was formed and it took Smith to 30 wickets for the season and won the game for Goresbrook. There was some terrific fielding also on show, with great catches being taken by Callum Shepherd, Ben Irving and Billy Smith. There was also two sharp stumpings taken by Ben Irving and Shane Barwick who shared the keeping duties as 'Brook run out easy 38 run winners.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "It was a great effort today with players missing, another fine all-round display in the field, good batting all the way down the order, topped by Billy's bowling spell which was superb".

Goresbrook U13  v  Upminster 'C' U13   Havering League   Thu 23/7/09

Goresbrook 176 for 3 beat Upminster 69 for 6 by 107 runs

Goresbrook won the toss and decided to bat first in this Havering League clash. 'Brook lost in-form opener Chris Dove for 1, before skipper Shane Barwick joined Ben Irving at the crease where the two made hay scoring freely and in fine style, before Irving fell for a run-a-ball 21. Barwick was then joined by Bobby Gaymer and the Barking Abbey schoolboy produced his best knock of the season so far striking 32 in 23 balls before retiring. Shane Barwick continued his majestic form of late hitting yet another 30 in 23 balls before having to retire. Brad Reed hit a quick-fire 9 before the innings was ended by Liam Addison (17 not out) and Riley Brown (6 not out) as 'Brook hit a massive seasons best of 176 for 3 from their allotted 20 overs.

In reply,  Upminster's inexperienced side were never going to challenge  the massive target but they did make a good spirited fight against a classy Goresbrook attack. Callum Shepherd (1 for 5 from 3 overs), Shane Barwick (2 for 1) and Riley Brown (2 for 9) were the wicket takers. Billy Smith produced a fine throw to get Hammond run out, and Brad Reed took two fine catches as 'Brook eased to a thumping 109 run victory.

Goresbrook U13  v  Belhus U13   Friendly   Mon 20/7/09

Belhus 79 for 8 lost to Goresbrook 82 for 2 by 8 wickets

In this friendly Goresbrook totally outclassed a Belhus side who weren't in the same class as the home side. Belhus won the toss and batted first. 'Brook gave bowling opportunities to Stuart Greaves and Riley Brown who both bowled 4 overs each, both bowling well enough with Greaves taking 0 for 25 and Brown 1 for 14. Shane Barwick took 2 for 8 before bringing on Bobby Gaymer and Jimmy Woodhouse who were again given 4 over stints. Gaymer produced a fine spell of swing bowling taking 2 for 9 including 2 maidens. Woodhouse took 2 for 12 and bowled with good pace. Callum Shepherd took a wicket also, whilst Irving and Barwick both took nice catches as Belhus were restricted to 79 for 8 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Liam Addison and Billy Smith were promoted to open but both fell early on for 3 and 5 respectively. Ben Irving who has been a bit short of runs in the last couple of weeks came in and used the opportunity to hit a well crafted 25 not out before retiring. Riley Brown (2 not out) and Luke Read (16 not out) saw 'Brook home with 8 overs to spare to gain another easy victory.

Harold Wood U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Havering League   Sun 19/7/09

Goresbrook 109 for 3 beat Harold Wood 69 all out by 30 runs

Goresbrook won the toss and batted first in this league clash. Luke Read and Chris Dove started in positive fashion before Read was out caught for 12. Skipper Shane Barwick entered the fray and the two Jo Richardson students put on a majestic partnership before both had to retire, Barwick on 31 and Dove on 30. In the last couple of overs Ben Irving (3), Bradley Reed (3) and Liam Addison (3 not out) managed to get the score above 100 as 'Brook ended on 109 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Harold Wood never looked likely to challenge the big target set, especially after Crisp who was looking very good  was spectacularly caught by Barwick off the bowling of Luke Read. After that wickets tumbled on a regular basis. Liam Addison (1 for 4 from 3 overs) , Callum Shepherd  (1 for 6 from 2 overs), in-form Billy Smith (2 for 8 from 3 overs) and Joel Oliver (1 for 12)  all bowled well before Jimmy Woodhouse came on to produce his best spell of the season. Woodhouse took 3 for 4 in 2 devastating overs as 'Brook wrapped up a very accomplished and easy win by 40 runs.

Rainham U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Friendly   Thu 16/7/09

Goresbrook 113 for 4 beat Rainham 50 all out by 63 runs

In another game designed to give the squad chances to shine, this time it was Lee Moran who took on the mantle of star of the day with a fine all-round showing.

'Brook were put in to bat and Jimmy Woodhouse scored 11 in an unaccustomed opening role. Riley Brown fell for just 4 before Stuart Greaves and Michael Payne entered the fray. The pair had not scored a run for the club  before this game but both managed the feat and hopefully will go on and improve from now on. Greaves scored 7 and Payne 1. Billy Smith also hit a career best 10 not out and  Lee Moran then came in near the death and struck five majestic boundaries in a quick-fire 23 not out helping 'Brook to amass 113 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Rainham were totally outclassed by the Goresbrook attack, with Moran completing a fine day taking 3 for 2 from 3 overs. He was backed up by Billy Smith (2 for 2 from 3 overs), Stuart Greaves (2 for 3), Shane Barwick (1 for 5) and Liam Addison (1 for 5). There were catches for Woodhouse, Moran and Barwick, a run out by Brown and a fine stumping by Luke Read as 'Brook eased to a comfortable 63 run victory.

Belhus U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Friendly   Wed 15/7/09

Belhus 60 for 6 lost to Goresbrook 63 for 3 by 7 wickets

In a game arranged to give some of the squad a chance to shine, Liam Addison took his with both fists and produced a fine all-round performance. Belhus batted first and were kept to only 60 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Goresbrook's always consistent attack produced another polished effort, with Joel Oliver (1 for 6) and Addison (3 for 4) the wicket takers, with two run-outs completed by Brad Reed and Shane Barwick. Addison also took a sharp catch. In reply, 'Brook knocked off the runs in quick time with Callum Shepherd opening and scoring 8 before being adjudged lbw. But it was Liam Addison who shone with the bat and completed a fine day at the office scoring an unbeaten 23, his innings included four boundaries as 'Brook eased home with 8 overs to spare.

Ilford U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Len Stentisford Cup   Sun 12/7/09

Ilford 126 for 7 beat Goresbrook 57 for 7 by 69 runs

In a rearranged match Ilford won the toss and batted first and had their first choice eleven all available, so it was always going to be a tough test for the young Goresbrook side. Harris and Alex both hit 30 before retiring and Abdullah hit 25, but 'Brook's strength is its bowling and fielding and they stuck with it and produced a great comeback and held Ilford to126 from their 20 overs. Skipper Shane Barwick was the pick of the attack with superb figures of 3 for 9 from 4 overs. He was backed up by Billy Smith who continued his fine form of late with 2 for 15 from his 4 overs, whilst Callum Shepherd was the other wicket taker with figures of 1 for 23 from 3 overs. Bradley Reed and Luke Read took fine catches along with Max Fook completing a fine stumping and Bradley Reed also ran- out Adiya with a fine throw.

In reply 'Brook's lack of form with the bat in depth continued as they were outclassed by some fantastic spin bowling, Shane Barwick being the only player to make any score of note. Barwick hung about for a long period before falling for 22, as 'Brook managed only 57 runs from their 20 overs losing 7 wickets, Ilford winning by a comfortable 69 runs

Loughton U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Len Stentisford Cup   Sun 5/7/09

Loughton U13 beat Goresbrook U13 by 7 runs

Loughton won the toss and decided to bat first in this group match in the Len Stentisford Cup match. Goresbrook were up against a very powerful batting line up and as per normal put in a really great effort in the field. Openers Shane Barwick and Luke Read bowled really well at the start, Barwick's figures were 1 for 14 from 4 overs and Read 0 for 9 from 3. Addison, Dove, Greene and Shepherd all bowled well without taking a wicket before spinner Billy Smith was brought on to bowl. He bowled four magical overs of off spin and took 5 for 19, he also grabbed a hat trick as well, his first for the cluband it was his second 5 wicket haul in the cup competition this season.  Good catches were taken by Greene and Dove, and Read also took a fine stumping off Smith which in fact was the hat trick wicket. On a flat track it was a top effort to keep Loughton down to 126.

In reply Brook were going to have to improve on their recent form with the bat after their last two games where runs had been hard to come by, and what a fine effort they made of it. Luke Read struck a majestic 30 before having to retire, then Shane Barwick joined Ben Irving and they put on a good partnership and took Goresbrook into a position where victory was a real possibility before Barwick was caught in the deep for 27. Ben Irving was run out shortly after for 27 as risks were being taken. Brad Reed hit 9 before being bowled and Joel Oliver was bowled for 1, which left Dove and Addison to try and score 18 off the last over and they fell just 7 runs short in the end.

Manager Barwick added; "That was a great effort from a young side who are learning all of the time". "We are so consistent in the field week after week and it was also great to see young Billy get his hat trick". "The top order batsmen played really well and this was our best effort of the season so far".

Braintree U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Peter Coe Cup   Sun 28/6/09

Braintree 138 for 7 beat Goresbrook 64 all out by 74 runs

Braintree won the toss and elected to bat in this Peter Coe group match. Goresrook's bowling and fielding yet again were superb and a credit to the club as Braintree struggled to get any momentum in their innings. There were plenty of good figures to be noted. Skipper Shane Barwick led from the front with figures of 1 for 24 from 6 overs, he was backed up by Chris Dove (1 for 20 from 5) and an impressive spell of spin from Callum Shepherd who took 1 for 18 in 5 tight overs. Billy Smith (1 for 21 from 4 overs) and Luke Read (1 for 24 from 4 overs) also assisted with good catches from Barwick, Moran, Fook and Read helped Goresbrook to keep Braintree to 138 in their 30 overs.

In reply, 'Brook started brightly hitting 27 for 0 from their first 4 overs. Dove fell to Humphreys and skipper Barwick then got bowled first ball and Humpreys duly obliged with a hat trick trapping  Ben Irving lbw first ball, even though the ball seemed to be going way down leg. Minutes later the whole 'soul defying' incident happened as in-form opener Luke Read edged the ball to slip and was again controversially given out caught even though it was very doubtful that the ball had carried. After that wickets fell at regular intervals and it wasn't until number eight batsman Bradley Reed came in and hit a quick-fire 19 that any resistance was shown. Lee Moran was also given lbw in controversial circumstances as the game ended prematurely with Braintree winning by some 74 runs.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "We yet again bowled and fielded in fantastic style". "We have struggled recently with our batting but today we had some really poor decisions go against us". "We will, however, go again and use this defeat as a reason to improve and go forward".

Fives & Heronians U13  v  Goresbrook U13   National Cup   Thu 25/6/09

Fives 128 for 9 beat Goresbrook 64 for 8 by 64 runs

Goresbrook were dealt a very harsh lesson by a very strong all-round Fives side in this big cup match at the lovely Paddock ground in Chigwell. Fives won the toss and batted first and amassed 128 for 9 in their 20 overs . Against such a powerful batting line up this was another impressive effort in the field by Goresbrooks very young side. Shane Barwick took 1 for 14 from his 4 overs and was backed up by Luke Read who took 1 for 26 from his 4. It was, however, when the spin twins came back on that wickets fell on a regular basis. Callum Shepherd taking 2 for 26 from 4 and Billy Smith taking 2 for 16 in 3. They also produced three run-outs as well with great throws from Barwick, Irving and Gaymer and three sharp catches taken by Shepherd, Barwick and Max Fook behind the stumps. All in all it was a top effort. In reply however, it was more hard going, with wickets falling and more importantly runs becoming very hard to come by. In fact only Luke Read (11) and Shane Barwick (16) managed double figures as Fives dominated with the ball and were very impressive. 'Brook ended up falling way short on 64 for 8 losing by 64 runs.

'Brook stand-in manger Martin Rooke was delighted with the effort and the commitment and added; "We were up against a top side who had bowlers of class all the way through". "Saying that though,  we were top class in the field and with the bowling in general ourselves."

Goresbrook U13  v  Gidea Park & Romford U13   Havering League   Sun 21/6/09

Goresbrook 88 for 8 (20 overs) beat GP&R 80 for 4 (20 overs) by 8 runs

Goresbrook won the toss and batted first in this Havering league encounter. Ben Irving batted well early on scoring 19 but wickets tumbled regularly and 'Brook could only manage 88 runs from their 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Skipper Shane Barwick batted for most of the innings and scored an unbeaten 30 before he had to retire, his innings proved to be vital as in the second innings Gidea Park didn't have the fire power to challenge the small total.

'Brook's bowling attack was so consistent, they only bowled 4 wides in the whole innings and that helped put pressure on the visiting attack. Barwick lead the line with 1 for just 7 runs from 4 overs, he was backed up by Woodhouse (0 for 7 in 2 overs) and spinners Billy Smith (1 for 8 in 4 overs) and George Reeman (1 for 6 in 3 overs) as Gidea Park fell 8 runs short of their small target.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "We are not scoring enough runs down the order at the moment and are relying on two or three players, but the bowling side of things is fantastic at the moment, and is winning us games along with some great fielding".

Goresbrook U13  v  Hornchurch U13   Havering League   Wed 17/6/09

Chris Dove was looking good but then fell to a good catch for just 6. Opener Read was then joined by Ben Irving and they picked up the tempo and the runs started to flow, until Read was run out for 29. Irving then carried on without much support and his unbeaten 21 and return to form was much needed as it helped 'Brook to post a competitive total  of 107 for 6 from their allotted 20 overs.

In reply Durrant and Kenley were looking good and it looked like being a close affair until Chris Dove was brought into the attack. The left arm seamer who hadn't bowled in the last couple of games produced a wonderful spell, bowling 4 overs and taking 5 wickets  for 10 including 1 maiden. He was backed up by Shane Barwick  (1 for 17), Brad Reed (1 for 5) and Callum Shepherd (1 for 2) and with Luke Read taking 2 fine stumpings  plus Barwick and  Reed both producing fine run outs, Hornchurch fell 53 runs short as 'Brook won in a canter.

Goresbrook 109 for 6 beat Rainham 69 all out by 40 runs

Goresbrook used this friendly to blood some new faces and give opportunity to others who had not had much of a chance to shine yet and it proved to be a good workout. 'Brook won the toss and decided to bat first, with in-form Bobby Gaymer getting 'Brook off to a flyer before retiring on 27. He struck four boundaries and was supported admirably by debutant Max Fook who hit a fine 19. No one else managed double figures as 'Brook ended on 109 for 6 from their 20 overs.

In reply 'Brook used all of their 10 outfield bowlers and still managed to bowl out Rainham for just  69 runs. Brentwood 179 for 9 beat Goresbrook 107 all out by 72 runs

Brentwood won the toss and elected to bat in the searing heat at the Annex ground on a flat deck. Shane Barwick and Liam Addison bowled beautifully in the first 8 overs restricting Wood to just 18. It was when the pair came off that Wood started to get on top. Read, Faires and Smith all bowled loosely before Callum Shepherd came on to bowl a fine spell of off spin bowling. He took the first wicket of the innings trapping Maxwell plum lbw for 26 and ended with figures of 1 for 22 from 6 overs. Reeman took a wicket but was expensive, before Barwick came back on to take two wickets in as many balls and was on a hat trick, his first victim being superbly caught by Billy Smith. Barwick ended with 2 for 27 from his 6 overs, Addison ending his spell with figures of 0 for 31 from 6. Joel Oliver was the other wicket taker as Brentwood ended on a daunting total of 179 from their 30 overs. Haynes top scored with a majestic 73 for Brentwood.

In reply 'Brook needed the top order to all score and contribute, but they couldn't manage it and were bamboozled by the Brentwood spin attack . Reeman fell for 2 and he was followed back by Irving and Faires who both fell for golden ducks. Read and Barwick were looking good but both were undone by quality balls and they fell for 13 and 9 respectively. Oliver and Addison fell sson after, but there was a fight-back in the form of Chris Dove and Bobby Gaymer. They put on 41 before Dove fell for 18, whilst Gaymer kept up the good work but in the end ran out of partners as he ended on a superb 29 not out as 'Brook ended there run chase 68 runs short.

Manager Barwick added; "It was great experience for the lads to play a 30 over match, but we were totally outclassed today." "We bowled well and fielded with great enthusiasm and special mention goes to Ben Irving who fielded fantastically and it was good to see Bobby show some form with the bat also."

Goresbrook U13  v  Wood ford Wells U13   Len Stentisford Cup   Sat 13/6/09

Goresbrook 75 all out lost to Woodford Wells 76 for 9 by 1 wicket

Goresbrook skipper Shane Barwick won the toss and decided to bat first, but it was a decision that he was left to rue as wickets tumbled regularly throughout. In-form openers Irving and Read both fell early for 0 and 1, skipper Barwick and Chris Dove then started to make a fight-back before Barwick was unluckily run out for 8. Dove followed shortly after for 10 and then a collapse ensued with only Joel Oliver showing any resistance, he hit a dogged 15 before he was the last man out as 'Brook stumbled to 75 all out.

In reply 'Brook needed to strike early and that's exactly what they did, with Barwick bowling a devastating spell of seam bowling taking 4 wickets for just 6 runs from 4 overs. He then run out Tenby with a great direct throw as 'Brook had Wells 37 for 5. Liam Addison bowled well going for just 11 runs from his 4 overs and Luke Read (1 for 15 from 4) also bowled with good discipline being showed whilst defending such a small total. However with McDermott looking good along with Ellis the game swung in Wells favour, but then Jimmy Woodhouse bowled a fantastic fourth over of his spell and Wells went from 60 for 6 to 60 for 9, his double wicket maiden giving him figures of 2 for 18. Lee Moran completed the run out as 'Brook got into the position of needing just one wicket with Wells needing 16 runs still for victory, but Kairi and Masters saw Wells home to an unlikely victory with just 3 balls to spare, leaving the young Goresbrook side feeling devastated after such a great effort in the field. Goresrook manager Scott Barwick added; "I'm gutted, enough said".

Havering-atte-Bower U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Havering League   Wed 3/6/09

Goresbrook 92 for 8 lost to Havering-atte-Bower 93 for 5 by 5 wickets

A very young goresbrook side made up of 10 of the Under 11 squad from last season took on a surprisingly strong and old Bower side in this Havering League game at Broxhill Road. In the friendly two weeks before, Bower played a totally different side, so 'Brook's comfortable victory that night counted for nothing.

'Brook were put into bat and with both regular openers missing Mason Faires and Chris Dove took on the role, but both were knocked over early with in-from Dove falling for a duck and Faires going for just 2. Lee Moran was looking good before being bowled by the 6ft 2in Ager for 10 and then Addison and Oliver both fell for ducks. At 35 for 6 Riley Brown joined skipper Shane Barwick at the crease and a mini fight-back started. Barwick carried on his fine start to the season caressing the ball to all parts of the ground playing with great maturity as he had to stay in and play within himself for a number of overs to enable 'Brook to challenge some sort of total. Brown also played his part, his 12 was a very solid and dogged effort, before he fell to Townsend. Barwick was joined by Bobby Gaymer who only hit 4 not out but it was vital he saw the innings through to the end. Barwick finally had to retire on a superb 33, his innings included 4 fours, and it helped 'Brook post a decent 92 for 8 in their 20 overs .

In reply, Matchplay Under 16 opener Reece came out all guns blazing smashing Addison for 3 fours in the 1st over, but Addisons class shone through and he blew up the opener in his 2nd over with a peach of a ball. With fellow opener Barwick bowling superbly at the other end, 'Brook smelt an unlikely chance of victory as Bower were reeling at 36 for 4. Addsion (2 for 28) and Barwick (2 for 15)  were superb, and when Faires blew away Williams and Bower were 50 for 5 it was game on. However, Bowers surprising strength in depth for this game enabled them to send in batsman after batsman of decent ability, Mitchell (32 not out) batted superbly against in-form spinner Billy Smith and fellow spinner Shepherd and saw his side through to victory with 5 wickets in hand.

A deflated manager Scott Barwick added; "We had a very young side out tonight against an older, bigger and stronger Bower side, and a totally different outfit from our friendly two weeks before." "We were missing both our opening batsmen, but even that may not have been enough tonight." "Losing will give the lads a kick up the backside, so we will take that as a positive and the fact we bowled superbly in general and dug out a decent total in the end after starting so poorly with the bat."

Leyton County U13  v  Goresbrook U13   Len Stentisford Cup   Sun 31/5/09

Goresbrook 91 for 8 beat Leyton County 86 all out by 5 runs

Goresbrook, unbeaten this season, turned up at the Leyton County ground with a depleted team and with three boys suffering with really bad viruses, but who were determined to play. Skipper Luke Read fell for 6, followed by Ben Irving (11), Chris Dove (12) and Shane Barwick (12) before a good knock of 17 by George Reeman enabled Goresbrook to post an average, but challenging, score of 91 for 8 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Dipesh scored a fine 33 and Hamza 13 as County looked likely to ease to victory, but Read broke up the early order taking 3 for 24. Barwick left the field due to illness and wickets were becoming hard to find until Billy Smith entered the fray. He was suffering as well with the nasty virus, and had been in hospital the night before, but was desperate to play, and what a performance! Smith bowled 3.5 overs and took a fantastic 5 for 12 with his off spin. It was the 12 year olds best ever figures and duly won 'Brook the match by a close 5 runs.

Manager Scott Barwick added; "We were not at the races today yet still won against a good County side. What a great effort from the boys as a few of them were really poorly," "Special mention to Billy Smith who bowled a magical spell of spin bowling, belying his tender years."

Goresbrook 135 for 3 beat H-a-B 110 for 5 by 25 runs

'Brook skipper Luke Read won the toss and elected to make use of the excellent Havering wicket. With Riley Brown unluckily run out for 1, Goresbrook ended their 20 overs on a very decent 135 for 3.

In reply Havering made a real attempt at getting near the big target, but with  'Brook's usual straight and tidy bowling it was always going to be a bridge too far for them. Shane Barwick (1 for 9 from 3 overs), Billy Smith (1 for 12 from 3) and Jimmy  Woodhouse (0 for 10) were the pick of the Goresbrook attack. Riley Brown also bowled well with 0 for 6 from 2 tight overs, and Faires took a wicket at a cost of 22 runs. A special mention to debutant Stuart Greaves who took a wicket with his  second ever ball, he clean bowled Mitchell before ending with figures of 1 for 17. Williams scored 26 before retiring for Havering and Gale scored 12 before being brilliantly run out by Barwick as 'Brook eased to a fine 25 run victory.
