A party of twenty four travelled to Norfolk for Goresbrook Cricket Club’s seventeenth annual tour. The Dagenham outfit made their base in Norwich and were treated to some very competitive sport but were made extremely welcome by opposing sides. Sunday’s encounter at Rockland saw a comfortable 40 run victory for the tourists and they enjoyed a day off with a trip to Yarmouth Races on the Monday. Tuesday’s visit to Hardingham was curtailed by rain with ten overs of the host’s reply completed. Wednesday saw a fantastic game of cricket settled on the last ball with victory to the Tourists against old friends Great Melton. Thursday’s visit to Norwich Bystanders yielded another victory as the hosts chased 157 in an evening 20 / 20 match. Tour Manager, Mrs Susan Whisker, was delighted with the outcome of the tour which, with three victories, proved a thoroughly enjoyable week for all who made the journey to Norfolk.

Abandoned - Rain On Tuesday Goresbrook moved on to the picturesque village ground at Hardingham. Batting first the Essex men got off to the worst possible start when Joe Barwick holed out from the bowling of Goody fist ball of the match. Goody then had Chris Burke caught for a golden duck and was on a hat-trick with his third delivery of the game. ‘Brook were indebted to experienced campaigner Keith Maund who saw them through this uneasy passage with a polished knock of 35 whilst occupying the crease for 100 minutes. This enabled Adam Ivey to go for his shots and he didn’t disappoint lashing 7 fours and 2 maximums in a classy 43. Skipper Toby Maund again demonstrated his natural talent with the willow moving with ease to a superb half century before retiring. Maund’s knock contained 4 fours and 3 huge sixes from only 34 balls. Following a lengthy shower the covers were removed and the game reduced to 30 overs a –side. Kane Messenger (17) and Richard Williamson (10) were the other visiting batsmen to record double figures as the hosts attack shared the wickets around whilst ‘Brook progressed to a par score of 191 all out. After tea, a two wicket salvo from Richard Williamson and an early scalp for Kurt Whisker had the hosts reeling at 21 for 3 but as John Perfect (10 not) and Michael Law (6 not) had battened down the hatches the heavens opened and called time on proceedings with the match abandoned.

Keith Maund (2 for 37) and Dan O’Sullivan (2 for 41) briefly arrested the charge but Alex Cooper and Chris Elliott picked up the gauntlet and appeared to have secured the spoils with only six required from Shaun Ross’ final over. In a drama drenched finale, Cooper struck the first ball for two then bowler Ross dotted out the next two deliveries before Elliott was run out by Ross for an excellent 24 sharing in an eighth wicket stand of 74 with his partner.
