3's on top but have to settle for a draw

Goresbrook 3's and Fives and Heronians 4's played out an entertaining draw at the Annexe on Saturday.
Those arriving at the scheduled meet time had to nous to cover the pitch as a constant heavy drizzle began to fall that didn't let up until ten past one. Both sets of players helped remove the covers and play was able to get under way at 13.25 with, further showers notwithstanding, a match of 37 and 32 overs per side.
Brook, having been asked to bat, struggled to put bat on ball in the early exchanges and soon found themselves 16-3 but the middle and lower order all managed to keep the score ticking over without any one batter really going on to get the big score that would have helped set a fully defendable total. 16 year old Siraj Zafar top scored with 24, the highlight of which was his hitting 16 off one over. Brook's final total of 132 off 35.1 overs left the Visitors needing 4 an over from a minimum of 33 overs.
Leonard Thoufick and Arayaman Parida opened the bowling and both produced testing spells which resulted in a wicket for Parida caught by Owen Elsom at mid off. A mis-field a few overs later resulted in a run out thanks to a quick recovery and throw by Siraj to Arayaman that left the visitors skipper stranded a foot short.
Fives were endebted to Chigwell School master Neil Saunders as he kept the score ticking over but he benefitted when a fairly straightforward catch on the square leg boundary was spilt across the line for a maximum.
John Nicholls bowled a superb line and the 15 year old was rewarded with 3 wickets; one bowled and two caught, by Lennie and Siraj. Then, when Bobby Granger bowled Latif, Saunders decided he would have to do it all himself and he farmed the strike expertly with the run rate fluctuating between 5 and 6 an over. Owen Elsom went for 11 from his first over but good fielding subsequently resulted in two run outs; a direct hit by Alfie Atkins and a good chase and throw by Mafi Choudhury and this, coupled with tight overs from Elsom and Choudhury, left Fives requiring 22 from the final over. Alfie Atkins couldn't hold on to a very sharp chance at silly mid off and Fives held on for the draw, Saunders unbeaten on 74.
Barring a couple of spilt catches, all too common thus far this season alas, Brook once again fielded well but were left to rue the slow start with the bat.
