Century for the Marvel

Goresbrook 3's could only draw with Harold Wood 6ths at the Annexe on Saturday despite an unbeaten century from the evergreen Andy Livett.
Brook were inserted after losing the toss and got off to a solid start with Alfie Atkins and Livett both hitting boundaries against experienced opening bowlers before Atkins lobbed a simple catch to cover. Arayaman Parida came in first down but was soon back in the hutch, however Leonard Thoufick joined Livett and helped increase the scoring rate with a flurry of boundaries before he fell, looking to accelerate, for 45. Billy Parnell then entered the fray, the Reading University student leading a somewhat charmed life in his first game of the season, before falling for 35 in pursuit of quick runs.
Meanwhile the Marvel had quietly accumulated another 100 and ended the innings with 115* out of Brroks 227-4 declared from 42 overs.
Brooks declaration left the visitors needing 228 from a minimum of 43 overs and with a battery of young bowlers plus the experience of Owen Elsom and Joe Barwick to contend with.
Pawan Singh got the best possible start with a wicket in his first over, Billy Parnell gobbling up the edge behind the stumps. Wood then consolidated with Alex Davis and Skipper Dan Lucas both getting themselves well set. However Arayaman Parida bowled Lucas and then Bobby Granger accounted for Davis who on 49, fell to a spectacular dive and grab by the effervescant Livett at slip. Owen Elsom then enticed a tickle down leg that Parnell grabbed with the gloves before he took another without, having relinquished the keeping duties at drinks, off Granger at silly Mid off to leave Wood's innings balancing precariously at 102-5
However, Chris Low and Andy Mortimer shut up shop and, despite a chance spilt in close, survived a barrage from all-comers against a close-in field to hold out for a draw, Wood finsihing on 174-5 from 43 overs.
While Brook had the luxury of runs on the board, it was disappointing that the bowlers were unable to keep the batsmen under continous pressure and that too many wides and loose ballslet the batsmen relax and enjoy their evening in the sun.
Nevertheless, despite the disappointing result, it was an enjoyable game against friendly opponents.
Next week Brook are home to West Essex.
