No coming back from 16-6

Goresbrook 3's travelled to the picturesque Clark's Field, the home ground of Galleywood CC for this TRippon Division 7 fixture.
Losing the toss and being asked to bat by home skipper Dan Mower, clearly having a modicum of local knowledge, paid immediate dividends as Brook hit the depths of 16-6 against the talented and aggressive opening pair of Cockrell and Robson.
Fast and full length bowling with plenty of movement off a sticky wicket soon sent a succession of batsmen back to the hutch, two to golden ducks. Keith Maund then put all of his experience to good use as he saw off the opening pair ( thank heavens for the ECB young fast bowlers restrictions) and then along with Frankie Boland, continuing to occupy the crease as he has thus far all season, began to accumulate runs including a maiden 6 for the former 4th team skipper as he pulled to deep square leg with the ball never rising higher than 4 feet off the ground.
After Maund fell for 36 and Boland for 12, it appeared as if much of the good work had been undone but last pair Danny Gillham and Joe Barwick continued to bat sensibly and looked as if they would manage to bat out the full 45 over allotment when Gillham was rather harshly adjudged LBW at the end of the 42nd over with the score on 104.
Keith Maund 36
Frankie Boland 12
Danny Gillham 22
Skippy 9*
Galleywood's players spent much of the tea interval covering the pitch, most of which was trying to stop the covers blowing away, a move that prevented the showers passing over spicing up the pitch.
Galleywoods reply started very circumspectly and the first wicket fell trying to force the pace as a drive to Gillham at mid off resulted in a direct hit with the batsman floundering mid pitch. Bobby Gaymer nabbed a couple of wickets before limping out of the attack with a muscle strain. Danny Gillham came on and bowled aggressively, as always, and nicked a couple of edges, the first of which was given, the second surprisingly not.
However the pick of the bowlers was Joe Barwick, who troubled everyone he bowled at with a nagging line and length which resulted in two well deserved wickets. Galleywood continued to inch towards their target but contrived to give Brook openings as Gillham again threw to Darren Robinson, who demolished the stumps with an athletic dive with the batsman still stranded.
However the home attack levelled and then passed the target against a succession of loose deliveries to win by 3 wickets with 13 overs to spare.
A more disciplined batting performance with 20 -30 more runs may have just been enough to win the game on another day but the effort and performance in the field was admirable given the abject start to the game.
Gaymer 2-12
Gillham 1-20
Barwick 2-22
