Goresbrook skipper Bradley Winsley lost the toss and his side were invited to bat first at Belfairs on Saturday. 17 year old ‘keeper Aaron Scott demonstrated a mature, disciplined approach, playing the anchor role for the visitors occupying the crease for fully 157 minutes. The right hander accumulated an excellent 59 which included three boundaries. Fellow opener, Paul Lowe, continued his rich vein of form with a sparkling 39, sharing in an opening stand of 69 with partner Scott. Following the departure of the experienced Lowe, Dunston Alfred joined the fray and after surviving an early scare made the Eastwood fielders pay with a series of swashbuckling shots, fashioning seven fours and two maximums in an entertaining 69 before being stumped off the bowling of Mitchell. Alfred and Scott compiled 97 for the second wicket to consolidate ‘Brook’s early dominance with the willow. Mitchell toiled with the ball but his two wickets came at a cost of 74 runs. After Scott’s dismissal, Jo Wilkinson played a late cameo role with an unbeaten 16 to steer his side to 187 for 3 from their 45 over entitlement.
After tea, Ben Irving struck early with a two wicket salvo to set the alarm bells ringing for the hosts. Fillary (30) battled hard in the face of a useful Goresbrook attack as Tommy Puncher’s accurate spell yielded 4 for 42 to lift the Dagenham outfit in to the ascendancy. Veteran seamer, Paul Atkins - no doubt with memories of his club record haul of 9 for 26 against the same opponents back in 2002 – was again the scourge of Eastwood as he overcame the resistance of the hosts with an impressive return of 4 for 12. Fittingly young gloveman, Aaron Scott, completed a fine all round display pouching four catches as ‘Brook’s third string eased to a comfortable 95 run victory.
