Goresbrook 224-8 beat Hornchurch Athletic 118-10 by 106 runs

Goresbrook 3's batted first in Saturdays TRippon Division 10 league game at Raphaels Park and put up an imposing total which, despite the single handed efforts of Irfan Usmani, Athletic never looked like chasing.

When Brook batted, veteran opener Andy Livett creamed a cover drive for a boundary but then edged behind next ball. Aaron Scott and Atif Ali got in but fell quite cheaply, so at 46-3 Brook needed an partnership of substance and this came in the chalk and cheese form of teenager Charlie Thompson and the slightly more mature Jo Wilkinson.

Thompson raced to 50 with a flurry of fours and sixes and looked set for a mammoth score when he fell to the returning opener Connor Madams. Wilkinson batted circumspectly at first but then joined in the fun peppering the boundary on his way to 49.

After their stand, Ben Irving fell for a duck and Bradley Winsley followed trying to up the pace to give Madams his 5th wicket. However Brook had Dunston Alfred in scintillating form as he took the score from 194 to 224 in the final three overs before being run out going for an ambitious but gettable third run that would have brought up the 4th batting point. Brook totalled 224-8 from their 45 overs.

When the Hylands Park men batted, Brook's opening pair of Owen Elsom (2-45) and Ben Irving (4-46) steamed through the top order reducing Athletic to 15-5 but this brought Irfan Usmani to the crease and he took up the attack with a display of ferocious hitting which yielded a quickfire 50. Bradley Winsley (1-6) brought himself on and succeeded in stemming the flow of runs and snared Usmani in the safe hands of Daryl Forward. Irving then returned and battled in vain to remove the steadfast John Thomas. Joe Barwick (1-10) grabbed a tail end wicket to a spectacular salmon like one handed take by Forward and it was left to Forward himself, smarting a little at having to wait for Irving to complete his allotted overs, ripped out the tail in 4 balls (2-0). Save for Usmani's strokeplay, Brook's attack was far too good for Athletic and with the majority of catches being taken Brook wrapped up the game with a 106 run victory.

A much sterner test of Goresbrooks mettle will come in next weeks top of the table clash with Thurrock at the Annex ground but after today all the lads should go into that game not without confidence, whatever they are required to do.
