Newham II vs Goresbrook III - Essex County Cricket League Div 2

Bradley Winsley started his tenure as 3rd Team skipper by leading Goresbrook to an exciting one run victory at Flanders on Saturday in a match reduced to 39 overs a side, due to heavy showers falling early in the game. Opener Dunston Alfred was unaffected by the stoppage and powered his way to 26 before being run out. Joe Curley took up the baton with a superb knock of 46 which included six boundaries. Teenager Ben Irving added 13 before becoming one of Samir’s three scalps at a cost of 22 runs. With Ashwan bagging a brace, Newham appeared in the ascendancy but ‘Brook’s tail wagged as Martin Rooke (9) and the last wicket pairing of Joe Barwick (7 not) and Dave Leadbeater (10 not) added invaluable runs at the conclusion of the visitors innings, enabling them to close on a respectable 148 for 9.

After tea, Newham were quick out of the blocks reaching 66 for 1 which became 79 for 2 as Chris Wilding struck twice to remove Shyam (11) and Patel (14). Opener Mohamed continued to lay the foundations of his side’s reply but fell to first change bowler, Joe Barwick, for 32. The introduction of captain Winsley also proved fruitful as he claimed 2 for 27. Brook were now in the ascendancy as 19 year old Barwick was the scourge of their middle order with an excellent spell of 4 for 30 from 8 overs, but all rounder Samir’s 24 tipped the scales in Newham’s favour before being superbly run out by Joe Curley. Alfred’s solitary over produced a wicket before Curley completed a memorable day when tempting Aswad to edge to Winsley with only two balls remaining.
