Same Old Story at OCs
1s fall at Lawford Lane again
Jordan Calverley’s men started their Mid-Essex Premier Division season looking to improve on their third placed finishes of the past two seasons. However Goresbrook had lost at Old Chelmsfordians' Lawford Lane ground in all three of their previous Premier Division campaigns and the Old Boys made it 4th time unlucky for the Dagenham side with an excellent opening week performance.
With Brook missing their quickest bowlers Israel Ochwo and Harry Jackson, medium pacer Kane Messenger was awarded the new ball and he responded by picking up a wicket with the first ball of the match, a fine partnership between Nadeem Ahmed (44) and Aseeb Rehman (40) then steadied the ship though and it took pace being taken off the ball for Goresbrook to fight back. Both set batsmen fell to the Goresbrook spinners, Shane Barwick taking 4-30 and Billy Smith 1-27, the pair wrestling back control for the visitors in their 10 over spells and with Shaun Ross also picking up a couple of scalps, Brook sensed an opportunity to bowl OCs out for circa 160. However Tom Bird (26) ensured that the tail wagged, pushing OC’s from 146-7 to 192 all out, a decent total with plenty of moisture still in the early season pitches.
The Goresbrook reply was in disarray from the outset, Bird dismissing Chris Burke and then Aseeb Rehman continuing his fine all-round day with 4 wickets including the big wickets of Kurt Whisker and Shane Barwick before Brook had reached 35. A couple of partnerships steadied the ship, but Brook were soon reeling again at 90-6 after Craig Irving fell and Kane Messenger was trapped plumb in front. Only skipper Jordan Calverley held firm for the visitors, but once he went for a well crafted 59, the writing was on the wall and Faz Rehman and Joe Grant picked up a pair of wickets a piece as OCs ran out 35 run winners in the 38th over.
