Rarely does a club cricketer score a century and finish on the losing side but that was the fate that befell Goresbrook’s Jordan Calverley at May & Bakers Sports Ground on Saturday.
Green skipper Lloyd Edwards won the toss and invited the hosts to bat and was duly rewarded as he dismissed openers Ted Ivory and Livash Ramduth in the early exchanges.
Calverley entered the fray first wicket down and fashioned 17 fours and one maximum finishing unbeaten on a ‘nelson’ 111 not out going to his ton with a huge six over mid wicket. Simon Jeffries (3 for 38) and Nabeel Tariq (2 for 28) arrested the home sides progress as in form Lee Jones supported with an excellent 25 and Muhammad Attuallah struck 20 to steer ‘Brook to an under par 209 for 9 from their allotted 50 overs.
After tea, Attuallah and Pawanpreet Singh struck quickly with the new ball but Choudhury Mahboob restored stability to the visitors reply with a dogged 34. Paul Hurworth (32) and Chris Cook (30) continued the good work with the willow setting the stage for Tom Gentle to put the match beyond Goresbrook’s reach with a hard hitting, undefeated 63 with partner Nabeel Tariq (34 not) ensuring there was no respite for the Dagenham outfit as they slumped to a 4 wicket reversal.
Goresbrook 1st 209 for 9 in 50 Overs (4 points) lost to Ardleigh Green & Havering-atte-Bower 1st 213 for 6 in 42.4 Overs (20 points) by 4 wickets
