A youthful Goresbrook side were taught a harsh lesson by title favourites Springfield on Saturday, as after winning the toss and choosing to bat, the visitors were shot out for just 90 runs with only Jordan Calverley showing much resistance with a battling 28 not out, achieved whilst wickets fell regularly at the other end.
The Springfield seamers were the architects of Goresbrook’s demise, the pace of Chay Pollinger accounting for 2 wickets with Ben Marrion and Andy Oval taking 3 a piece before spinner Matt Chalk mopped up the tail as a helpful pitch, accurate bowling and some poor shot selection made it a one sided contest.
Goresbrook tried to make the chase as uncomfortable as possible for the home side side, Israel Ochwo bowling with extreme pace to remove Frost early on, but James Latimer-Jones and Manny Singh both made 20s to steady the ship before being dismissed by Toby Maund and Billy Smith respectively.
Despite these minor hiccups, Springfield eased to a 7 wicket win with Jim Symonds shepherding them home to set up a mouth-watering title decider with 2nd placed Bentley next week.
Skipper Kurt Whisker hoped some of his youthful charges would learn from the experience, “We had Aaron Scott making his 1st team debut and a couple of under 15’s in the side, so hopefully it was an eye opener for them as to the level required against a really good side, if only by watching the quality of Springfield's bowling and the way Jordan battle to protect his wicket.”
