Goresbrook were thwarted by the rain when in a strong position for the second successive week, as a thunder storm at 6pm waterlogged the square at May & Bakers and despite a valiant effort to clear all standing water, the umpires determined that conditions were still too wet underfoot to continue once the mopping up operation had finished at around 7.15. A decision which few could argue with.
At that stage visitors Rettendon were 99-5 with 24 overs completed and they were starting to rebuild after losing the prolific Huntington early, lbw to Israel Ochwo after doubling his career tally against Goresbrook with 8 and then seeing spinners Shane Barwick and Billy Smith pick up 2 wickets each to leave Max Castledine leading a rebuilding effort.
Earlier Goresbrook skipper Kurt Whisker hit a fine 75 to get his side off to a good start and he received support from Jordan Calverley who scored 60 and extras with a fine 48 as Goresbrook built steadily towards a good total on a wicket that played very well given the wet conditions in the week leading up to the game.
Ultimately though it was all to no avail and the two sides reconvene at the same venue on Saturday for the 2nd of their 4 game series this season.
