1s on the board at the 2nd attempt

The 1's got their Mid-Essex Premier Division campaign up and running at the second attempt with a comprehensive demolition of fellow promoted side Burnham Sports.

The star of the show was paceman Israel Ochwo, absent for the opener against Thurrock, who terrorised the Burnham batsmen, taking 6 for 17, his second six wicket haul in as many games following his 6 for 20 in the pre-season game at Winchmore Hill, remarkably all twelve victims being clean bowled.

Ochwo's opening burst reduced the hosts to 35-7 and another of last week's absentees Shane Barwick followed up with 2 for 13 as Burnham were dismissed for just 68 in the 21st over, last man Andy Stephens top scoring with 18 not out.

Earlier Goresbrook battled to 233-8 with skipper Kurt Whisker anchoring the effort with a fine 62. Although no other batsmen passed 30, there were contributions right the way down the order, with a breezy 6th wicket stand of 43 between Barwick (27) and Bryan Atkins (29) pushing the score past 200 in the last 10 overs, a total which always looked like being too many for the hosts.

Whisker was delighted with his sides performance, the return of key players transforming Goresbrook in the field in particular,

"I thought we were excellent, we worked hard last week, but you could see the extra quality and energy when we bowled today.

The challenge is now going to be adapting to opponents and pitches that are completely new to us, as our first two games were against the only sides we've played before, but if we go in with that attitude I'm sure we'll be competitive."
