THE BALFOUR BEATTY LONDON YOUTH GAMES  2010

FINALS AT LORDS CRICKET GROUND  INDOOR  SCHOOL - SATURDAY 6TH MARCH 2010

Barking and Dagenham Under 13 squad finished in third place in this years London Youth Games cricket event. It was a fantastic effort from a hard working and talented bunch of boys. The borough has never entered a team in the event in three years, so to do as well as they did deserves special praise.

After winning through the group stage in fine style last week at the Harrow qualifying event, B&D went to Lords drawn against Richmond in the quarter finals. With a coach load of support behind them in the stand above, they produced a superb victory.  After losing the toss and being asked to bat first the consistent pairing of Chris Dove and Ben Irving did well again with Dove scoring 15 and Irving retiring unbeaten on 23. Skipper Shane Barwick scored 11 and Billy Smith scored 5 as B&D made it to 79 for 4 from their 10 overs. After the turnaround, B&D produced a remarkable performance with the ball. Liam Addison and Shane Barwick  both bowled tight overs, before Dove and Smith took over. Dove took 2 wickets for just 7 runs, and the spin king Smith bowling a mesmerising 4 for 5 in just 10 balls. Barwick took yet another fine stumping and with catches from Giani and Dove B&D won by a staggering 56 runs.

After a tour of Lords, the home of cricket, the boys had the daunting task of taking on Redbridge, the hot favourites  and eventual champions of the event.  Shane Barwick won the toss and elected to bat first, Ben Irving and Chris Dove continuing their consistent form yet again at the top of the innings. Dove made 17 before being run out, Irving retired again not out on 23. Barwick scored 10, Addison hit 8 not out as B&D amassed a very competitive 90 from their 10 overs against county standard bowling. In reply Addison had trouble with no-balls in the first over and his 10 ball over produced 12 runs. Shane Barwick  then produced a superb over taking 2 prize scalps, clean bowled for just 1 run and at this point victory looked on. It was all going to depend on Billy Smith's overs as he had taken 9 wickets in the previous four matches, however he was unable to repeat the feat in the semi final and Redbridge's powerful  batting line up started to pick up runs at a fair rate. Barwick left it too late to come back to bowl his second over and it meant Redbridge won the match with 10 balls to spare.

The Barking and Dagenham lads finished third overall out of 32 teams, winning a well deserved bronze medal in the bargain and they have put our borough back on the sporting map. All seven members of the squad play their club cricket in the borough for Goresbrook CC. It was a team effort all-round  with Sports Development Officer Emma Gillan, manager Paul Cooke, coaches Scott Barwick and Kane Messenger and all the parents and relatives doing their bit to make this such a successful campaign.

BARKING AND DAGENHAM  SQUAD:  SHANE BARWICK (capt),  CHRIS DOVE, BEN IRVING , LIAM ADDISON,  AUSMAN  GINLI,   BILLY SMITH.   MGR: PAUL COOK.  SENIOR DEVELOPMENT OFFICER: EMMA GILLAN.

A fantastic team performance from the Barking & Dagenham Borough representative side has ensured a day out at the home of cricket for Paul Cook's Under 13 side next Saturday. The squad, made up entirely from Goresbrook CC players, met Hackney in their first match whom they beat comprehensively, scoring 124 for 1 wicket in their allotted 10 overs. Ben Irving (21), Shane Barwick (20) and Liam Addison (20) all retired not out and Chris Dove scored 15. In reply Hackney were blown away by a fine bowling performance. Ben Irving who took 2 for 3, Shane Barwick 1 for 3 and Billy Smith 1 for 10 were the wicket takers and there were two good run-outs as B&D ran up easy 87 run victors.

In game two B&D played a stronger Westminster side. Again Shane Barwick won the toss and batted first and a decent total of 96 for 4 from 10 overs was posted. Chris Dove ended 24 not out and was backed up by Ben Irving (12), Billy Smith (10)  and Shane Barwick  (9). In reply Westminster batted well but yet again the B&D bowling was of a high standard. Liam Addison (1 for 10), Shane Barwick (1 for 8)  and Billy Smith (1 for 15) took the wickets and there were again three superb run outs. A mention also for Ausman Ginli who bowled superbly again as in the first match without taking a wicket, as B&D won by 21 runs.

In the last and most vital game B&D met a powerful Croydon side. Shane Barwick again won the toss and decided to stick to batting first as in the previous matches. Ben Irving batted consistently yet again scoring 21 before being controversially run out. Barwick fell for 12 and then a mini collapse ensued with Addison, Ginli and Smith all falling cheaply before Chris Dove came back to the crease. Dove, who retired on 20 earlier in the innings, hit a superb 36 not out helping B&D to set Croydon a target of 105. It looked like nerves and the pressure were getting to the boys as Croydon raced onto 40 for 0 off just 3 overs, but then enter Billy Smith who bowled a quite remarkable over taking 3 wickets with the help of Shane Barwick  who took 3 superb stumpings. Chris Dove then picked up a wicket in the next over and suddenly Lords was in their sights again. With both openers back in after they had replied earlier it was still game on, but two great run outs followed with top throws from Dove and Irving and two great takes from Barwick behind the stumps left Croydon some 28 runs short. It was a totally awesome effort from every member of the squad and they thoroughly deserve their day out at Lords next weekend  for the last 8 knockout stages.
